Busy.
A word that had been repeated to you throughout your entire life.
"Sorry I can't come to your birthday party, I got busy."
"I'm really busy tonight.... and tomorrow... sorry, see you later!"
"Sorry, Honey, I totally forgot! I guess I've just been so busy.."
"I'm breaking up with you. My life is too busy for a girlfriend to be in it."
Busy.
I understood, of course. Life happened. Things could be brought up, work is a struggle, studying takes time. I understand. But just because I understand doesn't make it hurt any less.
. . .
I walked through the school hallway, pulling my backpack closer to my body. After ducking and hopping over the crowd of students, I finally got to my locker- 403.
"Hey, um, (Y/n)?" a boy spoke from behind me. I soon recognized him as Peter Parker, my lab partner in Chemistry.
"Oh, hey Pete!" I greeted and began switching the books in my bag for the ones in my locker.
"Hey, so I wanted to- um- I wanted to ask you something," he struggled to find words. I smiled at him, making the obvious stress in his face fade away.
"Do you want to come over to my house for dinner tonight? May's making lasagna and we can go get ice cream afterwards... if you want," he grinned, fiddling with his hands. I felt the blood rise to my cheeks.
"I would love to come over tonight," I spoke happily, trying to hide the extreme excitement I was now carrying.
"R-really?" he paused, "I-I mean, great! Um, do you just wanna walk to my house after school with me?"
"Sounds great, Peter," I finished, my heart beating way faster than normal.
And that was the start of our beautiful relationship
. . .
One Year Later
"Hey Pete, um it's our anniversary and we had a dinner planned, but lately you've been kinda distant. I just was calling to make sure it was still a thing before I you know, I assumed anything. Well anyways, call me back when you can I guess. Love you," I spoke to the message machine on the other end of the line.
As of two months ago, Peter stopped calling as much and definitely began ditching on planned events. I loved him and all, but it was getting repetitive. I looked around the diner, seeing a few pitiful glances. Don't do that. Please. I don't need pity. I'm used to this.
I stood and walked out of the small restaurant twenty minutes later, still hearing nothing from Peter. Sirens sounded and police cars flew passed on the empty street. A thwip was heard shortly after, meaning Spider Man was back.
Whoever he was, he was a good man.
I sighed and shoved my hands in my pockets, trudging back home. A few tears threatened to fall but I didn't allow them to. At least, not until I got home. My parents were on some business trip, so I went straight to my bedroom and locked the door.
I dropped my bag and flopped onto my bed, finally feeling the warm tears trace patterns down my face. Was he cheating? Was he getting bored of me? Is it my face? Body? Insecurities flooded my brain.
About thirty minutes had passed before I heard the quiet ring of my phone on the floor. I groaned and sat up, feeling the blood rush to my head.
Is it Peter?
I rushed to my phone and didn't even bother to look at the name.
"H-hello?" Peter's voice asked.
"Peter? Hey," I trued to hide my scratchy voice.
"Have you been crying? Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, I- I got so busy-"
That word. Busy. There it was again. I sighed and slumped against my bed frame.
"It's okay, Pete. I just- do you still like me?" I blurted before I even knew what I was saying.
"Of course I still like you. (Y/n), I still love you. I just, there's this thing and I got caught up with.. everything.. I'm so sorry," he quickly responded.
"What's keeping you so busy? You've missed the last six dates," I wondered, praying for something other than another girl.
"I.... I can't tell you," he spoke back.
"W-why?" my voice cracked.
"I wish I could but I.. this is like one of those secrets I can't let out, you know? I- I'm doing this for you," he tried to explain.
"Y-yeah. Yeah, I understand. I... I trust you," I nodded my head even though he couldn't see it.
"Rea- thank you," he rephrased, "I love you so much. I promise I'll make it up to you."
"Alright, Pete. I love you, too," I smiled, "Do you think we could still celebrate our first anniversary? Maybe tomorrow or something, I guess it doesn't really have to be on the exact day.."
I heard Peter chuckle from the other line, "Come open the door, please, it's cold out here."
I raised my eyebrows and hung up on him, racing to the front door. I slowly opened it, finding Peter in a button up shirt with flowers and a small cake. I immediately felt under-dressed in my gym shorts and over-sized shirt I had changed into.
He nervously laughed, "Happy Anniversary."
"Happy Anniversary, Dork," I laughed and kissed him. I let him in, taking the flowers and cake into the kitchen.
A/N: Idk how I feel about this one... how do you guys feel? Yay or nay?
If this doesn't have ten votes by October 6th, then I'll probably delete it... idk....
Anyways, love you guys and hopefully I'll be posting more. This past week.. happened. Things were said and now my best friend might be in a lot of trouble because of me and now I have to confront him about it and ugh it's crap. On the brighter side I was asked to homecoming by my crush so hey, that's something.... ANYWAYS, that's why I've been so busy and haven't posted....
