I started getting tired of waiting for the step dad to show up. I was pacing in front of the store, lost in thought, ready to give up, when I spotted the familiar face. He was a balding guy, not necessarily attractive. But Minhyuk was right, he was dressed in a black suit.
'Alright, I need to distract him.'
But how? I hadn't exactly thought that far.
I didn't have long to think of a plan, the older man was almost in the door of the supermarket.
"Mr. Junseo!" I yelled after him, jogging over.
He looked at me, confused.
"Do I know you?" Mr. Junseo asked, pulling his hand away from the door. I could tell he was about to ignore me and go inside but after check me out, he walked over.
'Think, think.'
"Yeah, I'm a...."
I tried to remember what he did for a living, did Minhyuk ever tell me?
"I'm a neighbor!" I lied, regretting it almost instantly. Minhyuk said he didn't live around here, that wouldn't work.
Mr. Junseo looked confused, but he didn't seem to care.
"What's your name again?" He asked, eyeing my legs a bit too much for my liking.
"Areum." I replied, deciding to stick with the lie, "Remember?"
Mr. Junseo seemed to think for a moment before nodding, "Of course I remember! What are you doing out here?"
"I was just going to get something to eat!" I replied, a bit too excitedly. I was just happy I had finally come up with a good lie, or a lie he was oddly willing to overlook. I could lead him somewhere to eat, that ought to be a good enough distraction. "Do you want to join me?"
Mr. Junseo looked me up and down again, making me feel gross. If not for having to help Minhyuk, I never would have stood within a mile of this man. He definitely seemed like a pervert.
"Of course!" He smiled, a greasy smile. "We can eat wherever you want."
The evil stepdad and I spent what felt like an eternity having lunch. He paid for us to eat at a noodle shop, staring at me nonstop. I wanted nothing more than to leave, but had to distract him until everything was good. To ease my nerves, I stared directly into my bowl, not glancing up often at all.
I wondered what the signal would be? How would I know when it was okay to leave? Or would I just have to guess?
"So..." I looked up from my food, having lost my appetite because of the creepy atmosphere. "What are you doing for the rest of the day?" Mr. Junseo asked. I could tell he had something pervy in mind.
"Umm." I replied, staring down intently at my bowl, "I have to get back to... work."
"Oh, that's too bad." The stepdad said, his stare weighing me down. I looked down at my watch. I had distracted him for at least two hours. Should I be good to leave? "You should just skip and spend time with me instead."
His hand reached out across the table and aggressively grabbed mine.
I jerked away, looking up at him in shock.
'He totally is a pervert!'
I didn't feel so bad about breaking up the relationship between him and Minhyuk's mom anymore.
I stood up abruptly. "I have to leave."
I couldn't be around this man for another second. I was going to return to Lotte Mart and once we time traveled back, I was going to take a very long shower to wash the cringe off of me. But Mr. Junseo was persistent.
