"Isn't he just perfect?" I said. I was leaning over the cafe counter to get a better look at my fellow co-worker Jimin. He was the whole package: smart, attractive, a skilled dancer, and a hard worker. I was so lucky to be able to work with a guy like him. He could be an idol!
"I think I'm going to confess today!"
"Really?" My friend, Hyuna, asked in shock. She turned from the register to look at me, "When are you going to do it?"
"After work!" I exclaimed, "He always leaves for his dance classes after work. But I'll have to stop him right before he goes."
"Wow, you're really brave..." Hyuna said, turning to count the money in the register. Then a customer came up to order coffee to-go and while she was busy, I continued staring at Jimin.
He and I had known each other since freshman year of high school. I had somehow luckily landed a job at the same cafe as him, and by luckily I mean I kind of stalked him.
It still felt like this was fate telling me we were meant to be together. Everywhere I went, he seemed to be there too; and not just because I was kind of stalking him.
"Areum, two Americanos and a Cappucino please!" Jimin called from a table.
"On it!" I said, skipping over to the espresso machine to make the coffees. When Jimin came over to grab the drinks I asked him, "When are you getting off work?"
He smiled at me, "The usual time, 6pm. I have to teach a dance class tonight."
"Really?" I asked excitedly. Anything he said would have amazed me.
Jimin nodded, "It's a junior class."
He took the drinks and walked off.
'Wow, he's even good with kids!' I thought, lost in my day dreams. I could already imagine him teaching a group of kids how to dance, and it was adorable.
He was definitely going to be mine in the future, no matter how hard I had to try.
5:45 PM
After closing down the restaurant for the night, I was pulled aside by my boss. He was a man in his mid-thirties, a super nice guy. He hired me in the beginning of the year despite my lack of experience.
"Areum, may I speak with you for a moment?" Mr. Kim asked, he looked a bit worried.
"Of course." I took off my apron and set it on the counter. "What's wrong?"
"It's just..." He looked off into the abyss for a moment before turning to face me and say, "I'm going to have to... let you go."
I froze for a moment.
Was I getting fired? I needed this job to get me through college!
"W-what do you mean?" I stuttered, feeling myself start to tremble. I had never been fired before, I didn't know how to react.
"It's just..." Mr. Kim didn't seem comfortable talking about it. He couldn't look me in the eyes. "The cafe isn't turning as much of a profit as I thought it would and I can't keep all of the workers I have right now."
"Am I the only one you're firing?" I asked, a bit put off. I worked harder than most of the people here!
Not harder than Jimin, of course. He was perfect.
Mr. Kim nodded.
"But I've been working here much longer than Hyuna! And she doesn't even know how to make the coffees!" I protested. I was one of the few employees that went through hours of training to make the espresso drinks. He couldn't exactly afford to lose me. All Hyuna really knew how to do was stand around and look cute.
"I'm not going to argue this with you." Mr. Kim said before he handed me an envelope. "This is your last month's paycheck. I wish you the best of luck in life."
I snatched the money from him, stomping off to the back room to change. The only reason he was firing me instead of Hyuna was because I wasn't as cute as her. And I didn't flirt with him like Hyuna did.
'This isn't fair!' I thought. 'She's not even like that naturally, she got double eyelid surgery!'
I felt so angry, changing out of my work clothes as quickly as possible. I shoved the contents of my locker into my purse because I knew I wouldn't be back.
I looked at the clock.
6:05 PM
"Jimin!" I muttered, hurrying to catch him before he left. I hoped he wasn't gone yet.
There was still time to confess. Today wasn't entirely ruined yet.
I pushed open the back door of the cafe to the alleyway between stores. I spotted Jimin. He was looked like he was walking out on to the street.
I had just caught him in time!
"Ji-" I started to call after him until I noticed he was with someone.
I came closer and saw it was Hyuna.
'What is she doing?' I wondered, 'She never talks to Jimin alone.'
I started to crept closer until I heard, "Will you consider my feelings?"
Jimin was surprised, looking down at Hyuna.
'Is she... confessing?!' I wondered in shock. That was supposed to be me! And she knew it!
"I... I don't know what to say." Jimin said. He looked completely shocked.
Hyuna, clearly not content with waiting for a response, pulled Jimin's shirt and kissed him on the lips.
I gasped.
How could she betray me like this? She knew I was going to confess to him at this exact time!
I could feel myself start to cry, and I ran down the alleyway. I pushed past them, bumping into Hyuna's shoulder on my way to the occupied sidewalk. I was trying to hide my emotions, but couldn't help but take a peak at them.
I turned to see Jimin looking after me in shock, his face red. Hyuna looked smug. She seemed happy about stabbing me in the back.
This is exactly what she wanted.
I hoped to never see her again.
