(12 years old)
Me and Harley walk down the beige cracking side walk, our destination still about a block away.
"What kind are you going to get, Drew?" She holds such a carefree happy smile.
"I'm thinking tiger tail," the black and orange colours always reminds me of Halloween. "What about you?"
"Don't know," shrugging her shoulders her blonde hair bounces around gracefully. "We'll find out when we get there."
A lazy smile morphs on my face, typical Harley. Never panics or worries and seems to live life with no plan; somehow she still manages to be organized though.
As we approach the bright yellow ice cream truck there's already a long line up due to today's temperature. Record breaking heat this summer with a scorching hot sun.
Standing in line, Harley is in the perfect position where the sun's rays brighten her already glowing face and enhance her tanned skin. She looked absolutely beautiful.
The rowdy group of guys waiting in front of us are some juniors on the football team from our school. I really want to play football professionally, the adrenaline of not knowing whether you'll make your touchdown or not is energizing. As they become louder they also start getting more physical, at first I didn't really care. It's a guy thing. Until one of the players roughly bumps into Harley sending her flying backwards, she is after all half the size of these muscle mountains.
After quickly checking Harley for any serious injuries I turn angrily to the player. "Hey, watch where you're going!"
The obnoxious booming laughter stops immediately, almost making me regret my decision. Almost. They knocked Harley over, no one is allowed to hurt my best friend.
"Who are you talking to little punk?" The one in charge, presumabley the quarterback, sneers down at me. Damn them and their growing.
"You." I grit out boldly.
Laughing like it's a joke he half turns to his group of friends. "You hear that boys? This little kid thinks he can take me on!"
"Just stop knocking people over." I try to remain brave and ignore the four other pairs of eyes staring me down menacingly.
"Or what?" He taunts, a crooked smirk appearing at the corner of his mouth.
"Next!" The ice cream lady pops her head out the window. Phew. Thankfully the football group are buying their ice cream, now they'll leave.
It doesn't take long for them to receive their ice cream so Harley and I's orders go even faster. As we step out of the still long line up I thought we were in the clear until a big hand comes out and snatches our cones.
Whipping my head up I yell out. "Hey!"
"What? You want these?" The quarterback holds it just out of our grasp due to our height disadvantages.
"Give those back, we paid for those not you." I resist the urge to jump up and grab them when he lowers his hands slightly.
"Give them back." Harley backs me up, crossing her arms across her chest she sports a pissed off face too.
"Aw guys look the little girl found her voice too!" A chorus of laughter fills the air from his companions.
"And you'll be finding yourself in a lot of pain." Harley please stop before they hurt you.
