Phil
"And my problem was a hundred percent with Dan and not with you and it was totally unfair to take it out on you." Spencer had been talking for like five minutes straight, and his story kind of made sense. Maybe Dan did lie about it all, maybe he just painted Spencer as the bad guy because he was someone that he couldn't have.
After all Dan lied about everything else so why not about this? Phil had only heard Dan's side in all of this and he had now left him so Phil had every right to listen to Spencer's side right?
"And I totally know how Dan can be. He can put on a real show, with his sad eyes and lies about being bullied and stuff. I don't blame you for taking his side or anything." Spencer continued waving his hands in the air while talking. "But like now that you've heard my side, maybe you can see that Dan is really not all he says he is." Spencer looked genuine, either he was a really good liar or Dan was. And right now Phil was so hurt by Dan it felt easier to believe Spencer.
"What about last Friday?" Phil asked, "Was that also one big lie?" Spencer laughed out loud. "Did you really think that they'd allow me back at this school if I'd actually forced myself on him?" He shook his head grinning, "Nah Dan really took it too far with the lies then."
Phil had no idea what to believe. He had seen Dan, he had seen his tears, he held him when he slept through his nightmares. But did that matter now that Dan told him he never cared for Phil? What reason did he have to not believe Spencer.
Spencer saw the confusion and doubt on Phil's face and nodded, "Look I know it's all a lot, how about you come sit with us during lunch break and you can make your own opinion?" he put his hand on Phil's shoulder.
Phil frowned, "Us?" Spencer smirked, "Yeah us, my group of friends. I'll introduce you!" Phil shook his head in disbelieve, "Why would you do that?" "Because..." Spencer threw his hands in the air. "I don't want you to have the wrong idea about me. I'm not a bad guy!"
Phil had to be honest, when Spencer was talking to him, he didn't seem like a bad guy. And why the hell should he not with them? He couldn't sit with Dan, and honestly he wanted to hurt Dan the way he hurt him. If he was gonna drop Phil like he was trash Phil was gonna sit with his enemies, why the hell not?
"Okay!" Phil nodded. Spencer raised his eyebrows, "Really?" Phil nervously tucked on his shirt. "Yeah really, sounds fun!" "Alright Lester!" Spencer got a big smile on his face, "I'll see you at lunch then!"
"Actually..." Phil hesitated, "We have like five classes together today..." Spencer frowned, "Really?" Phil nodded biting his lip, he was extremely good at being invisible.
"Alright... then I'll see you in class." Spencer patted his shoulder before walking away. Phil's mind was racing. What was he suppose to believe? Did he really just get invited to sit with the "cool kids" during lunch? What if it was all just one big joke, another opportunity to laugh at him? But what if it wasn't, what if Spencer really wasn't the evil jock Dan painted him to be?
Dan
Dan had biology next, his only class together with Phil. He sat down in his usual spot in the back, hiding behind his hood with his headphones in. He knew if he made eye contact with Phil he was gonna cry and like hell he was gonna cry in class.
Yet when he saw a bright blue t-shirt out of the corner of his eye he couldn't help but look up. There he was, walking to his usual spot at the side of the class. He on the other hand doesn't even look in Dan's direction. Dan felt his heart ache. He lost the most beautiful person on this earth, and he couldn't even be honest about the reason why.
Phil hates you. Dan dropped his head to his desk and didn't move for the entire class. He couldn't look in Phil's direction, he couldn't even think about him without his entire body screaming in pain. He wanted him so badly, but he couldn't have him.
When the bell rang at the end of the class Phil got up immediately and left for the cafeteria. Lunch break. Dan waited until everyone had left the class before getting up. The last thing he wanted right now was to eat, surrounded by people he hated.
Slouching he walked out of the class room. In the hallway he took a second to observe everyone. They were all walking the same way, girls giggling in groups, guys yelling at each other from different sides of the hall.
More than ever Dan couldn't wait until he could get out of here. He'd leave this shit town and move to London. Starting a new life, without the label he got at this school.
On his way to the cafeteria people bumped Dan with their shoulders, they looked at him and laughed, girls pointed, jocks scrunched their faces when they saw him. Spencer got his way again, the entire school was on his side and Dan was painted as the gross homo once again.
Then, Dan felt his stomach shrink. At the popular table the usual guys were sitting, Spencer, Dennis, some other jocks, Jessica with some other cheerleaders, but in the middle... Dan recognized his figure from miles away, tall and skinny, his beautiful black hair and his eyes were radiating.
Dan's first instinct was to save Phil, they were bulling him again, Spencer broke his promise. But after a second Dan saw that Phil was laughing, smiling at the other people at the table, joking around. Dan felt his heart ache again, he didn't understand. What the hell was going on?
Then Spencer looked in his direction, he was the only who had noticed Dan. He got a big smirk on his face and waived with one hand. Before looking away he winked at Dan and then turned to Phil, saying something that made him laugh.
Dan felt tears burning behind his eyes. For a few more seconds he stood there staring at the group, but it soon became to much. He turned around, ran away to the nearest bathroom. Heads turned to watch him run, he heard laughs and slurs but he didn't care. He didn't care about himself, he just cared about Phil.
