Dan
"What are you gonna tell your mom?" Phil said, while helping Dan putting his jacket on. Dan flinched in pain as he had to stretch his arms in order to get the jacket on. "Dunno yet." he grunted. "I fell?" He turned around to face Phil.
"You fell?" Phil frowned. "Dan you look more like you got hit by a car." "Well... maybe I fell on top of a driving car." Dan smirked.
Phil shook his head grinning, "Ha. Ha." His face turned serious all of a sudden. "You know you don't have to lie to her... you could just tell her the truth."
Dan snorted mockingly and turned his head. "Yeah right." "I'm serious Dan, maybe she can help."
Dan shook his head, "I've tried telling her, all that happens is that she gets more worried and the guys get more pissed off." he zipped up his jacket. "I'll tell her I fell."
Phil sighed, he was fidgeting with his fingers. Dan could see the worry in his eyes. "Hey..." he put one hand on Phil's cheek. "It's gonna be fine! I promise..." he smiled softly.
"How can you promise that?" he gently pushed Dan's hand away. "You don't know that." Dan could see him slightly scowl. "These guys are not just gonna leave you alone Dan."
"Thanks for the moral support." Dan said sarcastically. "What do you want me to do about it?" "Tell someone!" Phil spat out. "You can't just keep your head down and take it!"
"Uh, yeah I can, I have been doing so for the past year." Dan crossed his arms. "Yes and see how well that has worked out for you so far." Phil gestured at Dan's stomach.
Dan raised his eyebrows. "Oh yeah because getting the principal involved really helped last time didn't it?" he mocked. "Why do you even care Phil? This is my problem!"
"Because I care about you!" Phil cried out. "That makes it my problem!"
Dan could feel his body tensing up. Who the fuck does this guy think is he is, starting to make decisions about his life? "Yeah well you know what Phil, about one week ago you didn't care so it shouldn't be so hard to stop caring now." and with that Dan turned around and walked out the front door.
He could hear Phil yelling his name behind him but he didn't care, he just kept on walking. He felt the heat flushing in his face of anger. Phil had no idea what it's like to tell your mom how you got beat up, again. Seeing the worry and pity in her eyes. How she wants to help you, but somehow she can only make it worse. How she can see you're in pain and that gives her pain.
No. Dan decided long ago that this pain was for him to carry and not his mother. His mother who has never hurt a soul in her life and only wants the best for everyone. She doesn't deserve to see how much of a failure her son is.
And for Phil to just blurt out to tell someone so he can get help, please. Like that hasn't crossed Dan's mind in the past year. Like he hasn't tried to tell a teacher or anyone for that matter. All that does is just make the bullies more angry and aggressive. Phil might not believe him but keeping his head down and taking it has been the best option for Dan.
After a short walk Dan pushes open his own front door, still flushed with anger. Inside he is immediately greeted by his mom. "Dan! I was waiting for you, we really should..." she stops talking after she gets a good look of his face. "What happened?" She asks with a shaky soft voice.
Dan shakes his head and walks past her towards the stairs, "I fell." He mumbles.
"On both sides of your face?" his mom responds. "Dan don't walk away from me." she starts to yell. "Where have you been?!"
Dan stops right in front of the stairs to kick of his shoes. "At Phil's." he tries to hide his face by looking away from his mom.
"Phil?" his mom frowns, "Who's Phil? Did he do that to your face?!" she points at Dan, starting to sound quite angry. "What?! No I fell." Dan starts walking up the stairs.
"Dan, I'm not done with you yet." She crosses her arms. "Well I am done with you." Dan shouted back and ran for his room. He smashed his bedroom door closed behind him, panting. He had no idea what just came over him. He had never yelled at his mom like that before. He had never had a real fight with her at all.
He slowly laid down on his bed and stared at the ceiling. He breathing was heavy and he felt like his chest was about to explode. He felt so incredibly angry and he wasn't even sure why. Both Phil and his mom were just worrying about him and wanted to help but he just felt like he had enough.
He covered his face with both his hands, letting out a muffled grunt. At that moment he felt his phone vibrating in his pocket. He wasn't planning to look, feeling like he couldn't be bothered, but then it vibrated again and his curiosity won.
Phil: I'm sorry Dan, I didn't mean to push you.
Phil: It just hurts me seeing you in pain.
Guilt overtook Dan while reading these messages. Phil was such a good person, he was so good for Dan. Throwing his phone away Dan let out another grunt. He just acted like a major dick to the two people who were actually on his side. And now Phil was apologizing?! Phil to him? He really was too good for Dan.
Dan fell asleep like that, still in his clothes. Exhausted from the pain, the fighting, just that entire day had felt like a major set back. Not only was Spencer gonna keep attending the same school, Jessica was now apparently out to get him.
And behind all the drama he could feel himself falling for Phil, which was awful timing with Spencer and all. And on top of that there was the problem of Phil's dad who was probably not gonna be thrilled at hearing about his son being gay.
With all these thoughts and worries swirling in his mind Dan had one of the worst nights of sleep you could have.
