"So..." Katrina started as they walked toward Aaron's quarters. "Second best guard in the region, aye?" she questioned with a smirk. Laurance threw his head back in exasperation."What? You still don't believe me?" he asked, with a slight pout. It made Kat giggle.
"Oh, I believe you," she said before reaching for the hilt of her sheathed sword. "I just don't believe you've met your match..." she trailed off. Laurance stopped mid-step; a few feet away from his destination.
"What are you proposing?" he asked with a smirk. "A sparring match?" Katrina replied with a shrug, smiling slyly.
"I mean, only if you think you can do it..." she trailed off. Laurance chuckled.
"Fine. You're on."
Katrina's face held a silly grin as she made her way toward the western part of the mass of trees that lay beyond the ship's point of rest.
There was no doubt she was excited.
She felt like she was being lifted by clouds; floating up, up, up into the sky, surrounded by a bubble of euphoria. She was on cloud nine and she couldn't get down.
She didn't mind staying up there, though.
The day prior, Katrina and Laurance had agreed to a sparring match to see which party was better at combat. Learning that Laurance was the second-best guard in the region of Ru'an was what peaked her interest in this contest, really.
Disregarding the fact that she had a very strong crush on him. But that shouldn't have effected her decision much, right?
As Katrina neared closer to her destination, a brief 'slice' of metal sounded in the quiet, morning air. Hearing the sound this early in the morning, along with the feel of the cool, morning wind, accompanied by the distant sound of crashing waves of the ocean against the shore...
It was all so calming.
At first, she told herself she'd only watch Laurance for five minutes; observe the look of concentration on his face while he sparred against a tree. Watch as he got back into a fighting stance as if he were versing a real opponent.
And then, she got an idea.
Climbing the tree that stood before her, her hands gripped the rough texture of the bark as she took shallow breaths. She could feel a splinter of wood pierce the skin of her knee when she almost slid down the trunk of the large oak tree.
'(Y/n) is so much better at this than I am,' she thought with a tired smile once she reached the top of the tree. She let out a heavy sigh.
And then the slicing stopped.
A small puddle of panic rippled at the pit of Katrina's stomach as she watched Laurance survey the area cautiously, his sword in hand.
'He heard me sigh?!' Katrina thought bewilderedly as she clamped her left hand over her mouth; her right holding her steady against one of the tree's thick branches.
'He really must be the second-best guard in the region to be able to hear that,' Katrina thought warily, suddenly conscious of her breathing.
A smirk dawned on Katrina's features as she watched Laurance grip his sword firmly; light beads of sweat trickling down his forehead as the small outline of a vein bulged from the side of his neck. His eyebrows were furrowed and his hair slightly slicked back; though a few strands remained, falling above his eyes.
