You opened your eyes. It was dark, save for the gas lamp's light which emitted its amber glow from your peripheral vision. You squinted up at the sky, feeling the soft cushioning of a pillow beneath your head and a blanket around your torso. You attempted to sit up."Ow," you hissed in pain, immediately retreating to your original position. Your neck felt stiff. In fact, your whole body felt stiff and stricken with an indescribable pain.
'Why am I in bed? What happened? Why does everywhere hurt?' You stared upward for a few moments, trying to make out what seemed like shadows that danced like silhouettes on the ceiling. Once you began to grow dizzy, you tore your stare away from above, suddenly aware of the small dip in the mattress beside you. Ignoring the immense pain in your neck, you glanced to your right. By the bedside, on a chair, sat Ruby. She was leaned over, her head in her arms which rested upon the side of the bed. You let out a weak smile.
She was asleep.
"You're awake...good." Your eyes lit up with familiarity as you slowly registered the voice that suddenly rung out into the eerie silence. You forced yourself to look to the left this time, grimacing as you did so. To the far left sat Katrina, her right leg crossed over her left and her sword in hand. Her hair was out of its usual ponytail and the shade of amber casted shadows on her facial features, her eyelashes in particular, as she looked downward, avoiding your gaze as she spoke.
"...How are you feeling?" she asked, her voice sounding rather distant. She seemed serious—more so than usual—and her mood seemed to set the tone for the room. It felt as though there were dark clouds looming in the atmosphere of the room.
"I'm...I'm fine, thank you," you responded, confused. You had so many questions. Wanted so many answers. But where would you begin?
"Do you feel feverish?"
"No."
"Pain?"
"Yes. In my neck—everywhere, actually," you replied slowly with a crease of your eyebrows. "What exactly happened? How long was I out for? And...where is everybody?" you questioned, glancing around at the empty room (save for the two sisters and yourself).
"You've been out for quite a few hours. It's still the same day—late in the evening. I'm not too sure if you recall," Katrina began lowly, uncrossing her legs. Her boots landed on the wood-planked floor with a soft 'thump'. Her voice remained void of emotion and her eyes still refused to meet your own, "...but you fell. From the sky." You began to sit up slowly, careful not to wake Ruby.
"The...sky? How?" You felt bad for asking so many questions, but your memory still remained hazy. You did remember being with Garroth...on a date by the falls...in the northeast.
In speaking of which, where was Garroth?
Katrina remained stoic as she replied. "Do remember being chased out of the northeast forest? By a man?" You closed your eyes in deep thought, a headache forming as you continued to recollect the missing events that took place.
Your eyes shot open once you did. You nodded your head slowly as the memories began to trickle in. "Yes...yes, I do remember. Enki," you breathed out bitterly, remembering your encounter with him in the forest, his power to manipulate and create illusions.
Most importantly, his words. His talks of a rebellion and his warning to Aphmau. You wanted to shudder. Katrina leaned forward, her eyes finally landing on you.
