The soft sound of her alarm clock woke Serah from her well-deserved nap. After a deep yawn, she lifted herself from the bed.
She slipped on the jeans she wore before and ran her fingers through her wavy hair. The entrance hall seemed like a good idea to look for the others, but there was no need for a search. As soon as she left the room, Sam came around the corner, concentrated on the iPad in his hand.
"Hey, uhm..." Serah cleared her throat.
Sam looked up and smiled a little. "Hey," he said. "You feel better?"
She nodded. "Yeah. I really needed a bit of sleep after... everything."
"I understand, believe me." He glanced at his iPad. "I looked up Amie Ellerbee. Omaha, Nebraska. Her parents are Mona and Stephen Ellerbee?"
Serah watched him. "I don't know whether I should ask where you got this info or why you didn't just ask me."
Sam remained silent for a second. "Yeah, I don't know that either," he admitted and smiled faintly. "I suppose I am so used to having to dig out everything myself."
"Huh." Serah crossed her arms. "Maybe need a break of... Whatever you do."
"Yeah, no." He sighed. "It's important we get this done. We're looking for my brother, Dean."
"Jack told me," Serah said. "He said your brother is Michael's vessel."
Sam nodded. "And we have no idea what Michael is planning. If he even is planning anything. We're getting help with finding him, but so far everything has been a dead end. But at least that means I've got some time to work on finding Gabriel, huh."
"Maybe you should take a break and get some sleep," Serah suggested. "Just because you have some time to work, doesn't mean you need to work."
Sam smiled. "I really want to help you. If you want to, we can go to them and see if they know anything."
"If you're sure, alright. I'll just put on proper clothing and we're good to go." Serah gave him a quick smile before going back into the room she had slept in, putting on fresh clothes and making her way back to find Sam. Surprisingly, this was harder than she expected. She didn't remember the way back to the entrance hall. It took her a few moments but finally, she saw the large table, Sam leaning against it.
"Can we go?" Serah asked.
On the way to the car, they didn't speak a lot. In fact, inside of the car, they didn't speak a lot, either. The only thing preventing that situation from being even more awkward was the low rock music that was playing.
After maybe five minutes of driving, Serah started to wonder. Was there a single reason why she sat in the car with this complete stranger? She felt a bit dramatic, but the worst case scenario was maybe murder. On the other hand, Sam probably wouldn't have the right equipment to take her on. Humans don't usually have archangel blades lying around. And she could overpower him, probably as easy as her father could.
Sam knew about angels and archangels. He might be a hunter. In the back of her head, she felt like she remembered something. He had a brother named Dean. Sam and Dean, like the Winchesters? Serah didn't know a lot about the Winchester brothers. Only bits and pieces she picked up from angel radio once every year or so. The most important thing, though, if he was Sam Winchester, Serah would have been in big trouble. Maybe he did have an archangel blade.
Upon realizing how much she could be in trouble, Serah tried to calm down. Sam seemed genuine in his effort to help her. At first glance, he looked a little scary. Tall guy, broad shoulders, large hands. And lots of hair. Serah tried to see his aspects in a positive light. He probably is super protective and gives amazing hugs. His voice was nice to listen to, in her opinion. Also, his hair looked super soft. There was no way he could kill her. Or do other bad things.
She sighed.
Sam glanced over to her, trying not to lose focus over the street. "You alright?" he finally broke the silence.
"Yeah, I guess. I'm fine." Serah moved in the seat and leaned her head against the window. "Car drives are just not really my thing, I guess."
Sam chuckled. "Yeah, when I was your age I spent most of my life in this car."
"This car?" Serah looked over the tan front seat, out of the rear window. "Was it your father's car?"
"It was." Sam smiled sadly. "He passed away 13 years ago. Then my brother took care of the car... And now I do."
Serah's gaze wandered outside again. "Maybe your kid will drive this car in the future."
"If we ever have children."
Serah leaned back. "Why wouldn't you?" she asked.
"I haven't found the right person yet, and I probably won't any time soon."
When she looked over Sam's lips had curled into a sad smile.
"You sure about that?"
Sam sighed. "Yes. I thought I did, several times, but it wasn't meant to be."
"Need a therapy session?" Serah chuckled. "I want details."
"Well," Sam said. "When I was in college, I had a girlfriend. Her name was Jessica. She died in 2005. A few years later I lived with a woman called Amelia. We were happy, we had a dog... Then her dead-believed husband came back from war. And then... We never dated. I felt like there might have been something but... Yeah, it just wasn't meant to be."
Serah nodded. "I'm sorry for that."
Silence settled in. Serah leaned her head against the window once again. They would drive for at least another three hours, so a nap might be a good idea. She closed her eyes.
Dearest Gabriel. Is it weird to call you dad? I feel like praying to you makes me feel closer to you... Sam is driving me to Amie. He really wants to help me find you. This would be easier if you worked with us, you know. I still hope you're alive. I love you, dad. Sincerely, your daughter Serah.
