Sam left his bedroom, eyes still puffy from crying. He approached the exit door and his brother cut off his way.
"Hey, congrats!" He wrapped his arms around him and pat his back.
"Dean..." Sam mumbled. "I... I'm not engaged."
Dean backed off and watched him. "What?"
Sam looked away. "He asked me... And I said no."
"Are you kidding?" Dean asked. "Why?"
"I don't know! I was overwhelmed, I'm not ready yet."
Dean looked mad. "What did he say?"
"He was mad," Sam sighed.
"Understandably."
"And he thinks I don't want to marry him because he's not Jess."
Dean raised his eyebrows. "Jess? Jessica Moore? Your dead ex?"
Sam nodded. "I mean, I mentioned her. I said I wasn't ready yet, that I was scared he would end up like her. Now he's mad."
"You should talk to him," Dean suggested.
"Yeah, you try getting a hold of an archangel. He doesn't answer my prayers, or texts, calls. He hates me."
"Of course he does," Dean replied. "You rejected his proposal."
"Yeah, I wish I could take that back."
"Stop lying, Sam."
Sam knew this rustling of wings. He'd recognize it from anywhere. "Gabe..."
"Rejecting me is one thing, but lying is just mean."
"I'm not lying," Sam protested.
"If you could, would you go back and prevent her death?" Gabriel stared at him seriously.
"Of course," Sam said. "If I can prevent the death of an innocent young woman, I will."
Gabe sighed. "You've got as long as you need. If you think she's safe, pray. Don't tell anyone in the past I did this. You won't remember it until you are back. Live with the consequences."
Sam was speechless. "Gabe, I-"
But Sam already was back in time. He quickly glanced around, overwhelmed by the memories.
"Dad's on a hunting trip," he heard. "And he hasn't been home in a few days."
Sam remembered. This was when Sam asked Jess to leave, and that's when he looked at her. She watched up at him. Sam hadn't seen her in fourteen years. He knew he should feel something, anything. He was going to marry her. Now, he only felt regret. He knew what the right thing to do was.
"Jess, I think there's something you should know about me."
Dean immediately started to intervene but Sam carefully explained his past to Jess, and that she needs to come with them. Despite Dean's disagreement, Jess joined them on the hunt.
Sam felt weird reliving that. He tried to explain things to Jess, keep her company in the motel room. And obviously, Jess behaved like she always did. Hugs, snuggles, kisses.
Jess' lips were always a bit scratchy. Sam never minded, but now everything felt wrong. They were nothing like Gabriel's. They weren't sticky from candy, they weren't as soft, they weren't his.
He was glad when the hunt was over. They were in Baby and Jess was gonna leave the car.
"Wait," Sam said. "Why don't we say goodbye to Dean properly?"
Jess chuckled. "Bye Dean. Now come."
"Wait!" Sam bit his lip. "We should grab some midnight dinner. I'm starving."
"Sam, I'm tired." Jess left the car. Sam followed.
"Just bear with me, you can't go in there!"
Sam was going to explain, but it was too late anyway. Their apartment started burning. Jess screamed.
Silently Sam called the firefighters and called them there, then he entered the car. "We should leave."
Dean was clearly freaked out and Sam explained as much as he could. Jess sat next to him, and they drove off.
A feeling of relieving settled in. "Gabe," Sam mumbled under his breath, and when Sam closed his eyes, he felt the familiar feeling of his mattress, the blanket over his body. His eyes snapped open. "Gabriel?" He lifted himself out of the bed and started looking for the archangel. He wasn't far, just standing in the hallway with Dean. His steps got larger as he approached them. Gabe watched him.
"How was it?". But he didn't get an answer. Sam simply grabbed his face and kissed him. Suddenly, Sam's heart started beating faster and a wide smile grew on his lips.
"You chose me," Gabriel said. "You had the chance, but you chose me."
Sam smiled. "I did," he replied. "You wanna know why I did? Because she's fine, but she's not you."
Gabriel's eyes watered and he wrapped his arms around the hunter's neck. "I love you, Sam."
"I love you too, Gabe." Sam enjoyed being this close to him, but a voice made him look up."
"You two are the cutest, really."
Sam looked up, and there she was. Blonde, wavy hair lied on her shoulders, blue eyes watching him and a bright smile on her lips.
"Jess?"
The woman laughed. "You sound surprised," she giggled and stepped closer.
"It's complicated," Gabe explained.
"Sam is always complicated, isn't he?" Jess leaned against the wall. "Not just complicated, though. The Winchester brothers are something else."
"You can't keep flirting with us," Dean warned.
"You two got boring since you started dating your angels." Jess chuckled. "Tell Cas I fixed the tape player, by the way."
"I will," Dean promised. "Bye." He disappeared into his own room and Jess left, too.
"You better explain," Sam demanded. "Why is Jess here?"
Gabriel smiled softly. "You saved her. So she became a hunter."
"Jess became a hunter?" Sam couldn't conceal his clear concern, but Gabe only giggled.
"You and Dean helped her. And you broke up with her because something 'didn't fit' and you broke up." He leaned against Sam's chest. "And you still chose me."
"I did." Sam pressed a kiss on Gabe's head. "I'm sorry I rejected you. Really. I was just so overwhelmed and... not ready."
"I overreacted," Gabriel mumbled. "You know I can be impulsive."
"Like the time you impulse-bought five pounds of gummy bears?"
"Sammy, shhhh." Gabe pressed his hand on Sam's mouth. Sam giggled."
"How about Dinner?" Sam asked.
"It's still our anniversary."
"I'm gonna take you to a nice restaurant then."
