Sam smiled proudly. "I think we're done."
"We are," Jess agreed. "Now to the important things."
Sam shook his head. "I don't know... Are you sure?"
"We gotta." Jess hugged Sam's arm and leaned against it. "She's gonna cause even more trouble otherwise."
With a sigh, Sam gave in. "Fine. We better be home by sunset."
Jess left Theodora's room and walked to the garage. "Which one is yours again?"
Sam followed and showed her the way. "M'Lady," he smiled as he opened the door for her.
"Such a gentleman," Jess said. She got inside so Sam could close the door and get into the driver's seat.
Quietly, the two drove their way across the state. Neither of them was fond of the situation. Sam didn't want to face his daughter. Either she was evil and hurting people on purpose, or she was scared and lacking control over herself. Sam wouldn't want either for her. He knew all too well what it felt like to feel like a monster.
"Sam?" Jess' voice was low and thin. "Are you okay? You look a bit upset."
"No, I-..." Sam choked up and inhaled deeply. "I'm fine."
"You know I hate when you lie."
"Well, I'm not gonna have a therapy session with you." Sam focused on the road.
"Is it because of her?" Jess watched the hunter. "Or did something happen with Gabe?"
"No, no. Gabe and I are very happy and looking forward to our baby." His fingers wrapped tighter around the steering wheel. "I don't wanna talk about it."
"Okay." Jess watched outside of the window.
An old plastic swing stood in the front yard of the wooden house. It had the vibe of an old witch hut in the woods, given it was at the edge of a forest.
Sam parked the car. "That's it," he said. "Looks like a nice place." They got out of the car and walked down the pebble path. With hesitation, Sam rang the doorbell.
After a couple of seconds, the door opened. An old woman opened the door. "Can I help you?" she asked.
Sam smiled. "Hi, my name is Sam Campbell and this is my friend Jessica. We, uhm... You adopted a girl, she should be around 15."
The woman tilted her head until she seemed to understand. "I bet you mean Penelope." She smiled. "Do you know her?"
Sam watched Jess. "We, uhm... We are her biological parents."
"Oh, that's amazing!" The woman smiled brightly. "I bet she will be thrilled to meet you." She stepped aside and opened the door. "Come in. She must be in the living room."
Sam and Jess shared a confused look before going inside. They followed the old lady into the living room, a group of children were sitting around a large table, all of them of varying age and ethnicity.
One of them stood out to Sam: a tall girl with chocolate brown hair and broad shoulders.
"Penny? These two lovely people would like to talk to you," the old lady said.
The girl Sam had noticed looked up. "Uhm, alright?" She put down the pen she was writing with and got up.
"Is there maybe a room where we could talk in private?" Sam asked. "It sounds a bit more appropriate."
Penny shrugged. "We can go to my room." She went ahead and entered a room in the hallway, Sam and Jess followed.
Penelope dropped on her bed and watched up at the couple. Sam bit his lip and cleared his throat. "So, uhm, we... We wanna tell you something."
Jess sighed deeply. "I apologize. He's the awkward kind of giant." She patted Sam's shoulder and smiled. "I don't know if you know, but you're adopted."
"Yeah," Penny said.
"And we are your biological parents." Jess smiled.
Sam nodded and folded his hands. "Actually, there's another thing." Sam sat beside her. "We heard you, uhm... Had some issues with... powers."
Penny watched him. "You know about that?"
"Don't worry," Sam said. "I know what you're dealing with. When I was a baby I was infected with demon blood. And apparently, that's heritable."
"What?" Penny watched him with big eyes. "Demon blood?"
"Don't- don't worry, okay?" Sam raised his hands defensively. "You just gotta learn how to control it and stay away from demons." Sam smiled awkwardly and lowered his hands.
Penny rolled her eyes. "Yeah, just, stay away from demons. As if it's the most natural thing ever."
"You know what?" Jess grabbed her back and pulled out a can of salt. "When in doubt, use this." She set the can down on the bed table. "Get yourself an exorcism and you're basically set."
Sam chuckled. "I know this is scary and like puberty on steroids... You just need to... control it."
