When Sam parked the Impala in front of the address the Ellerbees were living in, Serah was still fast asleep. A strand of hair hang across her face, her nose twitched lightly every few moments and her lips were slightly parted, huffing out the exhaled air. She looked so peaceful.
Sam decided it was better to give her another few minutes to sleep and get out of the car. He approached the house. It looked old, like many generations already lived there. He knocked on the wooden door.
A blonde woman, maybe forty years old, opened the door. "Can I help you?" she asked.
"Yes," Sam replied. "My name is Sam Campbell. I am a distant relative of Serah, but I haven't seen her parents in years. I was wondering if you could help me out."
Mrs. Ellerbee looked frustrated. "Well, you can come in and we can talk about it with a cup of coffee." She walked inside the house, Sam following her to the living room. As Mrs. Ellerbee came back with two cups of coffee, Sam had settled down on the worn-down leather couch. "So, Mrs. Ellerbee-"
"Oh, Mona is fine," she interrupted, sitting down in the matching leather armchair.
"Mona," Sam started again. "Can you tell me anything about Serah's mother?"
Mona sighed. "Katherine was such a lovely girl," she began. "Very religious, never missed church... Then one day she started to behave differently."
Sam got intrigued. "Differently? In what way?"
"Well, she'd never been a big fan of sugary foods, and suddenly she only ate candies, masses of them. She skipped church, even got around with men and women, if you get what I mean."
Sam remained silent. If this wasn't Gabriel, Sam would officially retire. "And then she got pregnant," Sam assumed.
"Exactly," Mona agreed. "But she said she would never have sex with someone she didn't know, let alone be uncautious and become pregnant. She said an angel spoke to her and that's the last thing she remembered. Such a tragic story. She was barely 17 years old."
Sam couldn't believe Gabriel got this poor girl pregnant and left her then. "Is there any way I could talk to Katherine?"
Mona smiled sadly. "You're a few years late. She died at childbirth."
"And do you know anything about her father?" Sam further asked.
"I thought you were a relative of Serah," Mona questioned.
"Yes," Sam lied. "But very distant. I barely knew him."
"Well, neither did I, or Katherine. She only had a faint memory of a 17-year old boy she really liked. That's everything I know."
Sam nodded. "Thank you anyway." Sam set down the coffee mug he had been sipping on the entire time.
"Have you seen Serah?" Mona asked.
"Yes. She's currently living with us. Nothing to worry about." Sam smiled.
"She is very dear to my heart. Katherine was the little sister of my childhood best friend, so I obviously took care, since Julia and Katherine couldn't."
Sam watched the woman. "Katherine had a sister? Can you give me her address?"
Maybe five minutes later, Sam already was back in the Impala. Serah, tired and confused, watched the note with an address written on it.
"It's your aunt's place." Sam started the car and drove. The address wasn't too far away so, after only five more minutes, he parked again.
Serah basically jumped out of the car and ran to the door. Sam chuckled and followed. Serah rang the doorbell.
The woman that opened was a lot taller than Mrs. Ellerbee. She was tall and skinny, with ginger-red hair she had put up in a bun.
Sam cleared his throat. "We are looking for Julia," Sam explained.
"That would be me," she said. "Do I know you?"
Serah ran her fingers through her hair. "I am your niece," she said.
Julia watched the girl. "You are Serah? Jesus, you grew up so fast."
Serah blushed. "I guess I did. It's really nice to finally meet you." Her lips curled into a smile. "I just wanted to ask some things about my mom and my dad."
Julia crossed her arms in front of her chest. "Your dad? Yeah, he was a prick. Was all romance-y with Kathy and then left without a word."
"Oh," Serah exclaimed.
"Do you know where he went?" Sam asked.
"No. Probably left the state. Didn't return phone calls, wasn't seen anywhere near this place ever again."
Serah looked disappointed. Hearing things about her father that were this bad didn't seem to fit with her.
"On another note," Julia said, clearly noticing the shift in mood. "Amie came over and asked if I had seen you. Whyever I would have."
"She did?" Serah asked. "Why would she care?"
"Don't ask me, ask her. She shouldn't have gotten far, she left maybe five minutes ago."
Sam watched the girl. "You wanna look for her?"
Serah shrugged. "Not sure. We're not really besties, you know. But yeah, screw it, why not." She stuffed her hands into the pockets of her jeans. "Thanks for your help, anyway."
"No problem. Sorry I couldn't tell you more."
Serah nodded and went back to the car, Sam followed. Her eyes gazed over the street. "She probably went to Margo's or-"
"What the actual hell are you doing here?"
Serah spun around, face to face with a blonde girl with blue eyes.
"I asked you a question," the girl repeated.
"I heard you the first time, Amie." Serah remained silent for a moment, then sighed. "I was trying to get some info about my parents. My dad at least."
"Looking for someone that finally cares about you?" Amie scoffed.
"Yeah, you mean like your mom always liked me a little better than you?"
"Serah, stop it." Sam looked at the girls, both of them about a moment away from crossing some sort of line.
The atmosphere gave off an uncomfortable vibe until a phone rang.
"Yeah, that's mine. I'll leave now. Bye." Amie picked up, listened to the person on the other end and nearly dropped the phone.
