Digging Graves

She watched him play the piano from the door way. His music was always beautiful. He didn't seem to notice her come in. He looked like George Washington. But with better tooth hygiene and real silver hair. He also wore peasant clothes, not those of the American President. He was also younger, despite the silver hair. Around twenty to twenty five. He was a prince, in Levania's eyes. Her knight in shining armour, even if he was her parents' servant.

He looked up and blinked at her. "Levania, what are you doing here so late?" he asked in his southern accent that always made her swoon.

"You know I cannot resist your music." she smiled from the doorway.

He didn't return her smile. "You know we have been under their surveillance. We are not meant to see each other, Levvie. And you know what they will say when they find us together. They will accuse us of treason and that is a risk we cannot take." he started to get up from the piano.

Levania rolled her eyes. "You know as much as I do the whole thing is ridiculous. My parents have clearly gone insane. All I was doing was listening to you play the piano. What is the harm in that?" she asked, crossing her arms.

"This is where I point out two things. You are in merely a dressing gown, and your parents made it very clear I was not to play your grandmother's piano. My defense is that I could not resist the urge to play. What is YOUR excuse?" Cameron asked.

"This is MY house, you know. I have a right to walk around in it as I wish. And might I point out to you, I am only locked up here, until my parents "find" me a suitor? Despite the fact I would rather drown myself in the Hudson, than to be forced to marry some rich snob." Levania leaned against the doorway.

"Keep your voice down!" Cameron hissed. "If they hear you-" he started.

"What do I care if they hear me or not? They have already made the first twenty years of my life unbearable, what could they do to make it worse, other than to send me to a boarding school or send me away? They know the only person I would ever give my heart to is standing in front of me." Levania said with a wave of a hand. "Besides, I warned them." she grinned deviously.

Cameron raised an eyebrow at her. "Warned them of what, exactly?" he asked.

"That if they lay a hand on either of us, I shall tell the public all their dirty little secrets. They dared to think I would go down without a fight, and they lost. Not only would they lose their daughter, but they would lose their land, their money, their fame, and the trust of everyone around them." Levania looked at her nails boredly.

"My God...." Cameron mumbled. "...You are truly the devil's wife." he looked at her in astonishment.

Levania grinned and walked over to him, wrapping her arms around him. "I never said I was innocent. Only human. And EVERY human has flaws and dirty secrets; you just need to dig deep enough to get to them. And you have to be willing to get your hands dirty, and possibly dig your own grave in the process." she kissed his cheek.

"And have you dug your own?" Cameron gave her the lopsided grin she adored.

"Darling, I dug mine the moment I laid eyes on YOU."
