Daniel sat on his throne leisurely, his legs draped over one of its arms. His crown lay on his chest, and he polished it in boredom. He found these parties unnecessary, but his parents insisted on throwing them to please the people of the courts. And of course he just had to attend them, or else he'd get scolded for being rude. He was a Prince after all, and he had to make good impressions if he was to ever take his father's place on the throne. Daniel cared little for politics though, and scarcely ever attended a meeting to make nice with the other kingdoms. For as much as he cared, they could kiss his boots.
Suddenly something caught in the corner of his eye. It was a quick flash of white. Daniel turned his head, looking for whatever it was that he thought he saw. Unfortunately, whatever it was, it was gone now. He snorted and went back to staring at himself in his crown. That is, before he was suddenly whacked over the head with something. He looked up, to see his mother's scowling face. She of course looked upside-down because of the way he was sitting, but her scowl was still a bad sign. A sign that he was in trouble. He gave a cheesy smile.
"H-Hello mom..." he said as sweetly as he could, before turning so he was sitting forward, and wasn't looking at her upside down anymore.
"Just what do you think you're doing, DJ?" Queen Elizabeth asked her son.
"I was just....taking a break..." DJ said.
"Do you think I'm stupid?" Elizabeth asked.
"No, of course not mom!" DJ shook his head.
"We didn't throw this party for our benefit, Daniel." the queen said, making DJ wince. He always hated when his mother called him by his full name. It typically meant he did something wrong. "We threw this ball for you and your sister to find suitors. Yet all you've done is sit here on your thrown, and not spoken to one guest! Meanwhile your sister has made multiple friends, and met some of the men who have come to seek her hand." Elizabeth huffed.
"I'm sorry mom...I'll go talk to some of the guests..." DJ looked at the floor, ashamed. As much as he loved to be seen as the flirtatious, rebellious prince, whenever it came to his mother, he was always put in his place. Eliza sighed, her stern demeanor fading.
"I don't mean to be so hard on you DJ. I just want what's best for you and your sister. You know that." she said, gently straightening up his hair.
"Yes, I know mom." DJ said.
"I don't care if you find a girl right away, but please, at least try to be social." Eliza gently took his crown from him and set it atop his head. "You are going to rule some day you know. Which means you need to rub elbows with the powerful, and suck up to a lot of them." she explained.
"Yes mom." DJ said, looking up at her. She smiled at him, pulling him to his feet and hugging him tightly.
"Please try to be polite. Make your father and I proud." Eliza said, and kissed his forehead. She smiled at him and patted his cheek, before going off back into the crowd to find her husband. DJ sighed. As much as he loved his mother, she sometimes expected too much of him.
-An Hour Later-
DJ had spoken with some of the guests, but everything they talked about was boring. He politely excused himself, and hid near the snack table. It seemed like the only good thing about his parents' parties was their food selection. After eating his fill however, he wandered off again. He found himself walking out onto the ballroom balcony, away from the party. He leaned against the railing and rested his elbows on it, staring out into the night sky. It was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. He loved looking at the seeming darkness that was illuminated by tiny spots that humans had named stars. He always wished he could go out beyond them, travelling among them, into the vastness of space. DJ chuckled. How stupid of a wish. One that would obviously never come true.
"DJ?" a voice asked. The young prince turned to see his sister standing in the doorway leading to the balcony, hands behind her back. Looking at her, he couldn't happen to think about how much she looked like their mother. "What are you doing out here? The party is in there." she tilted her head toward the ballroom.
"I know that. But it doesn't mean I want to participate." DJ turned his attention back to the sky.
Ariella approached him, looking up at the sky with him. "You know, there are a lot of girls who came here solely to meet you." she looked at the side of his face.
"Well they came a long way to see nothing." DJ scoffed.
"Perhaps." Ariella leaned on her older brother. "Or perhaps you're the one who came to see nothing." she said.
"What's that supposed to mean?" DJ asked.
"It means, big brother," Ari pulled away from him, "that maybe they're not the only ones who's hopes have been crushed." she said.
"Ari!" someone called. DJ barely turned to see that the person who had called for his sister was none other than her best friend, Xil. The two ran back into the party together, giggling, leaving DJ with his thoughts.
-Another Hour Later-
DJ stared out at the people of the court from his throne once again. He'd put much thought into what his sister had said, but he couldn't quite figure out what she meant. He had just about given up on the night anyway. That is, until he saw a flash of white again. He whipped his head around, looking for what the color belonged to. Finally, he spotted her. It was a girl about his age, with pure white hair that reached down her back, and vivid green eyes. His own eyes widened. It was her. She was the most beautiful girl in the ball. How had he not seen her sooner? He decided then and there, she was the one. She was gorgeous. He just had to have her as his queen. He stood up, and strode over to her.
To his surprise however, when she noticed him, the look she gave him was one of utter disgust, as if he was a bug that she was about to stomp on.
"Hello...I am Prince DJ..." he said, and bowed. He offered his hand to her. "May I have this dance, my lady?" he asked.
The woman looked him over. When she spoke, though the words stung, they came from the voice of an angel. "No thank you. I wouldn't dance with you if you were the last man on Earth." she huffed. DJ was dumbstruck. No woman had ever turned him before. Every woman he had ever met always fell for his charms. The people around the two seemed just as surprised.
"Excuse me?" he asked.
"You heard me." the girl said. "Now be on your way." she said.
DJ stared at her. Who did this woman think she was?
