Putting back the phone, Dev casually stood up and walked out like nothing happened. Sona's heart almost broke. Was that all? She still hadn't recovered from the shock. Quickly coming out from her hide-out, she walked up to the desk to see the paper still resting there. However, now it had a small note written underneath her paragraphs.

Saw your tiny feet under the bed. Don't even try to run from me. I will catch you😉 – ex-husband Dev Sharma

"Tara.... Where are you bringing me?" Sona groaned as she lazily dragged her own self out of her room.

"Just come na... give me a tour of your house. How long would we sit upstairs and do nothing?" Tara grumbled and pulled Sona down the stairs.

Halfway down, the lights suddenly went off and both of them froze at their places.

"Oh god, Tara what happened?" Sona panicked as her voice echoed amidst the quiet place. Tara just gripped Sona and stood behind her.

"I don't know.... Why don't you call someone for help?" Tara said.

But Sona was scared to death. Her hands trembled and heartbeat accelerated when she reached her hands towards the railing. She looked around and saw the corridors which looked so silent. Where did the others go?

"Maaa..... Dev.........? Where are you???" Sona shouted only to hear her own echoes down the place. Slowly stepping down, she held on to Tara and walked towards the living area.

Sona's eyesight blurred, not out of tears. But everything started becoming fuzzy and her conscious was floating on empty air. Throughout the inky space, her heartbeats pounded loudly, drumming in her ears. Before she could collapse in the dark, a loud popping sound alarmed her.

The next minute all the lights were turned on and a ray of colourful lights bloomed inside her sensitive eyes. The balloon filled with colourful sprinkles burst, halting every conversation and thought that sparked up in her mind.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU SONAKSHIIIIIIII" everyone's voice bloomed out and Sona just froze, completely paralysed. All thoughts of her complaints had been erased from her mind and she gawked to watch their figures approaching her.

She couldn't move, couldn't step ahead nor utter any word.

"Why the hell are you so late?" Rinitha's voice echoed in her ears.

"I.... they had..... so-some celebration in school." Sona lowered her eyes, fearing of the consequences which may follow after that.

"Oh... May I know what celebration required you to stay up till so late?" Rinitha drilled her gaze against the innocent kid. Sona came back a little later than usual after her school, but this time she couldn't escape Rinitha eagle eye.

"I....I....d-don't..."

"Let me tell your highness.....You were celebrating your extraordinary birthday, right?" Rinitha walked forward and twisted Sona's ears painfully. Sona squealed and clasped her ears in pain, but Rinitha's grip didn't loosen.

"What did I ever tell you bitch? You were a burden to this world. A burden to my family! A fucking nuisance.... Even after all this, we decide to keep you alive only because of our generosity. What the heck did you achieve to be celebrating this horrendous day? The day you came in to the world was the day everyone lost their happiness. Including your mother! Fucking burden." Rinitha spat as tears rolled down Sona's eyes.

"I didn't.....M-my classmates....d-d-it" she cried as the next blow was thrown straight on her face.

This time it wasn't her step-mother.......... It was her father.
