Ch. 6 - Senior Week II

(Xander)
"It sort of slipped."

"Did you mean it at least?"

"I think so. I don't know."

I looked over across the hall and Devyn was standing at her locker with Emery.

"Did she say it back?"

I shook my head.

"Hey, don't worry about it. She's been through a lot. Ethan is her ex for crying out loud. Maybe relationships are hard for her right now."

"I said it way too soon. I mean yea I'm falling for her. I really like her, man. She's fucking gorgeous. Her fire is hard to put out. Her anger, her attitude, bro, you have no idea."

"You can't avoid her all day you know?"

"I know."

The bell rang and the girls were avoiding us.

"She told her."

I wasn't trying to avoid him or anything. He said I love you.

Was it too soon? Did he mean it? Am I crazy?

"Let's get some food." Emery linked her arms with mine and we left the school building.

We walked out to her car and we left.

"He's blowing up my phone."

We were in the diner that my mom works in and I sit there.

Emery was sitting in the booth across from me and I looked at her.

"Text him."

"Saying what?"

I read the messages.

Xander: Hey
Xander: I'm not avoiding, I feel like I scared you off.
Xander: Please text me.

"He's worried about losing you, sounds like he meant it."

"I'm terrified. If he meant it than yea I do love him. I'm just scared to get hurt again."

My mom walked over with our plates and made a heart shaped with the ketchup.

I smiled, "Thank you, Momma."

She kissed my head and looked at me, "I don't mean to eavesdrop. But I like him. He's made you happy for the last two months."

"You're Mom knows best."

My cheeks felt warm.

"Let me know if you need anything."

"Will do."

My mom left our table and waited on other tables.

I started to eat my burger along with my French fries.

"I don't know, Em."

"Follow your heart. What's it telling you?" "Don't fall for it. Ethan."

"Devyn?!"

Everyone in the diner looked our way and I sit back. "I'm sorry."

I looked at Emery and my eyes widened, "I just can't risk my heart again. Ethan ruined me. He hurt me."
