A few hours later, it was still very early in the morning and the sun was not even fully out when I found myself jumping out of my brother's car and walking towards the beach with everyone already walking ahead of me. Ethan and Aaron were arguing about something, playfully pushing at each other, while, Andrew, David and Cady talked about something very seriously as they walked behind them.
Luke was walking by my side, a little distance away from me, but both he and I didn't know what to talk now, so we remained silent. I clutched the blankets tightly to my chest. I was planning on laying it out on the sand and taking a well-deserved nap.
"Hey," Luke cleared his throat, hesitantly shuffling closer to me.
I looked up at him, feeling the same stomach clenching effect he had on me before I peeled my eyes off him to fix it on the back of Andrew's head, "Hey."
He cleared his throat again, biting his lip, "Um, Are you going to get inside the water?"
I don't even know why he was asking me this. He and I both know that I hated getting into the water, at least not in the beach; I can use an indoor swimming pool, just not the beach. I hated that after I got out of the water, the sand usually stuck to my feet and every other part. I hated the feeling and I hated dusting it till every last bit of the sand fell off me.
I looked up at him and immediately shook my head, "No, I am just going to sit on the sand and wait for the sun to come up."
"And after it does?" he raised an eyebrow at me.
I shrugged, "I am going to put these creams over my body," I wiggled the bottles of sunscreen and moisturizer I had in both my hands and raised it slightly up in the air, holding onto my blankets in death grip, "And then leave my body to tan."
Luke nodded, gently biting on to his bottom lip. I don't know why my eyes immediately traveled to his lip, but they did. I swallowed as we walked to the beach, watching my best friend bite onto his soft – I would know – and pink lips. It took a lot of strength and efforts on my part to pull my eyes away from his lips, to look up at his eyes, only to see him already looking at me, a mischievous glint in his eyes. He cocked his head to the side and suddenly smirked.
I gulped, "What?"
"Nothing," he shook his head at me and chuckled, "Nothing at all, Caroline."
"Okay," I said and immediately turned to look at the front, cursing myself mentally when I realized what I had been doing.
"So, you sure you are not going to get inside the water?" he asked again after a few seconds of silence when we were closer to the water, just asking to know for sure if I was not going to enter the water.
"Yes, Luke," I shook my head at him, "I am not going in."
"Fine," he shrugged, and raised his phone towards me, smiling a little, "You think you can have my phone with you then? I'm going to get inside the water."
"Sure," I stopped, shrugging back at him, trying to place both my cream bottles down so that I can grab his phone from his hand.
"I will help you," he said, taking a step closer to me, efficiently stepping inside my personal space.
I should have told him to back off. I should have reminded him about my personal space and how much I love it. I should have asked him what he was doing, but no, I couldn't even open my mouth as I was already arrested in his eyes. I couldn't say anything, not even a word.
My heart, for some reason started to thud forcefully and my breathing went rapid as he slowly raised his hands and tugged me closer to him, his arms holding me in a side hug. I felt my stomach clench – this time with a warm feeling as I felt him sliding his phone into the back pocket of my jeans.
