"Come on, Deku!"
There were some rustles coming from the bushes and the trees, and out of nowhere, a young boy dashed through. His blonde hair was spiked up and free, resembling the freedom of his spirit. His necklace, with only a few teeth and gems, was following behind him as he ran. He couldn't hear the footsteps of the boy running behind him, but he knew the other was desperate. Too bad for him though.
With a few more pushes of his feet and quick breaths, the boy burst through the bushes and into the clearing around the lake. He laughed and held his hands high as his friend followed. "Yeah! I win!"
The other pushed himself through the bushes and pressed his hands against his knees to lean down. He panted, his green hair falling over his sweaty forehead. Yet, there was a smile on his face. "Of course you won, Kacchan. You're amazing."
The boy smirked. "Well, obviously."
Bakugo looked ahead to the lake, gazing at the clear blue water as it sparkled in the sun. It was flowing slowly, drifting along with ease and grace. Though there weren't many fish in the water, life sprouted up.
"This place is so pretty..." he heard his friend say. Bakugo looked over to Midoriya, who was walking by his side. "Dad and I used to come here and fish..."
Bakugo looked to his friend. He put Midoriya down for several things, but one thing he felt bad about was his father. They never talked about it. Midoriya would always mention his father's memory, and sometimes he would start crying. Then, Bakugo would lean over and hug him, and they'd spend the next hour sitting on the ground in each other's arms, talking about memories they could make together to eclipse the memory of his father.
But now wasn't one of those times. Instead, Midoriya pointed at the lake with a smile. "Do you want to swim?"
Bakugo smirked. "Duh."
Midoriya giggled, his childhood innocence shining through, and he ran up to the lake. Midoriya stepped out of his red shoes and shyly stuck his toes into the water. The cool liquid flowed around his toes, causing a few whispered laughs to rise up. Bakugo stepped into the water with confidence, his shoes long forgotten.
The water was only about a foot deep, so the young boys settled on splashing through it easily. Bakugo then got the idea to kick some water up to his friend. But his friend wasn't offended. He only kicked up water back to the young prince, giggling. Midoriya giggled at everything.
Bakugo cupped his hands and splashed them through the water, making sure most droplets landed on Midoriya. His laughter echoed through as Midoriya shyly returned the fight. But the young prince suddenly got an idea. He lured Midoriya closer and closer until he rose his arms and smacked the water. Midoriya's eyes widened with surprise as the liquid collided with him, knocking him off balance. He slipped and fell to the rocky bottom of the stream as Bakugo laughed. "Wow Deku! That was priceless!"
He opened his red eyes to look at his friend. Midoriya's green locks resembled a mop. They were soaking and splattered on his head. His shirt was clinging to the pale skin of the young boy. Water trickled down his body.
Midoriya didn't move.
Bakugo suddenly stopped laughing. He looked to his friend, worry filling him quickly. He wasn't actually hurt, was he?
Suddenly, Midoriya looked up, his emerald green eyes shining brighter than stars. "Hahaha! Nice one Kacchan! I didn't see it coming!"
Relief suddenly washed over Bakugo. He let his lips quirk up into a smirk at the sight of his friend. "Well, obviously. That's why I did it," he stated, reaching a hand out to Midoriya. The other took it and let himself get dragged up by his friend.
And suddenly, Midoriya leaned over and hugged Bakugo.
The prince didn't mind. He hugged his friend often, and this time was no different, even when they were soaking wet. He wrapped his arms around Midoriya and squeezed back just as tightly.
Bakugo suddenly thought of something. He didn't see his own mother and father interact very much, since most of his time was spent out here in the forest, but he knew they loved each other. They would always hold hands together, like Bakugo and Midoriya would when they were exploring the forest. The would always look at each other and smile when they talked, like Bakugo and Midoriya would when they spoke. They would sometimes even hold each other close, like Bakugo and Midoriya were right now.
He remembered his father pressing a kiss to his mother's cheek this morning, just before they left.
Bakugo thought about that. Though he didn't really understand his feelings, the young prince compared his relationship to that of his parents.
He wondered...
He eased out of Midoriya's tight hug for a second, just to back away an inch. His eyes traced over Midoriya's freckles, counting them. Four on each cheek. Midoriya's soft and curious gaze returned. "Is something wrong, Kacchan?"
The prince closed his eyes and softly pressed his lips to the lowest freckle, which was perfectly placed on his right cheek.
Midoriya's shriek of surprise was instant. "K-Kacchan!"
Bakugo withdrew his lips and looked at his friend. "Yeah? What's wrong?"
"I-I...!" Midoriya stuttered. His face was bright red like a strawberry, and he was shivering under his friend.
Bakugo didn't understand what the big deal was. "Are you ok?"
"You... you kissed me!" he gasped.
"Oh, calm down," Bakugo sighed. "It was only a cheek kiss."
"Yeah, but... it's a really big thing!" Midoriya argued. "It means a lot, and-"
"You mean a lot."
Midoriya sucked in a breath. Bakugo's face hadn't changed, and why should it? It was the truth, and it wasn't a big deal. Midoriya was everything to Bakugo. And, deep down, Midoriya was ok with being kissed by Bakugo, because Bakugo was everything to him.
"We can try kissing like the grown ups too, if you want," Bakugo said.
"How to the grown ups kiss?"
"On the lips."
"N-No!"
~
Bakugo woke with a start.
He would never truly get used to sleeping on patches of grass and using his satchel as a pillow. His red cloak was draped over him as a blanket. The campfire was nothing but ashes now. If that witch was good at anything, it was conjuring fire.
He placed his hand to his forehead, the images of his dream flickering though his mind. The voices were so clear, the skin felt so smooth and real. He looked over to Midoriya, who was curled up and sound asleep.
That was no dream.
That was a memory, and a damn cruel one at that.
His heart skipped when he looked at the freckle he kissed all those years ago. It was perfectly shaded under the green hair that blocked out the rising sunlight. His eyes were gently closed, and soft breaths eased out of his barely parted lips.
Bakugo's heart skipped.
No.
He was not wanting a friendship with this stupid boy, or a... could he even call his past with Midoriya a friendship? They were too young to be in love, but love captured them young.
Either way, he wanted no part of Deku.
So why'd that stupid nickname stick?
