The mermaid didn't know what had just happened.

A few moments ago, she was holding her trident, ready to defend her waters to the death. But then those beasts came in. They were tall and strong, containing power that she had never seen before. They didn't even look like a species!

She still remembered holding her trident across her waist, ready for anything-

And that's when they struck.

The beasts were able to swim as quickly as her kingdom, maybe even faster. They each tried to defend themselves, but many died. The memory of their bodies floating in the water made the mermaid shiver.

But then, the moon's light glowed brighter.

She remembered how the sorcerer soaked it up, remembered the sandy powder that was used, remembered how nearly everyone else in her army died in their own special way.

It was the same curse used on Draconia.

She kept herself hidden under the water, her jewelry floating around her. Her arms were hugging her tail close to her chest. Her trident rested by her side, the magic power residing in it dwindling.

She was sitting in the graveyard of her people.

After the battle, they all sunk underwater, freezing up in their war-like positions. Each of their bodies was nothing more than stone now. Their eyes didn't even sparkle with life.

Midnight cried.

She wept against her tail, her tears mixing in with the water around her. She was willing to give those villains anything, even her life, for the safety of her kingdom. She was so confident... she was so sure!

But they still did it. That sorcerer still managed to take away almost everyone from her kingdom.

The taste of defeat still lingered on her tongue, making her scrunch up her fists in fury. The ocean around her was still and dark. It didn't feel like anyone else was there. Midnight missed the feeling of it.

She glanced down to her trident. It was littered with scratches from the battle, but it still held a sense of might. Some of the pearls embellishing it fell off. Midnight didn't know where they were, and she didn't care.

She reached a hand down to her weapon and picked it up. The sand picked up from under the weapon, but it floated back down there with ease.

She scowled at her reflection in the weapon. "The sorcerer... he will fall..."

Midnight launched the trident into the sand, using her magic to launch it further. It crashed into the sand. The trident stood at an angle in the sand, surrounded by the stone figures in the moonlight.

The queen backed away in her dark corner, and she released a sob. Holding a hand up to her mouth, she continued to weep.

"Your majesty..."
