This can't be real.
Those four words kept repeating in Axel's mind over and over, each moment seeming longer than the last. When the figure in front of him lowered the hood that was shrouding its face, his heart stopped as the golden yellow eyes stared blankly back into his emerald ones.
Your eyes.
What happened to the glistening [e/c] orbs that once looked back at him in adoration? The same eyes that he got lost in time and time again while engaging in meaningless conversation. The same eyes that sparkled with excitement and love; the same eyes he fell in love with in return.
You continued to stare at Axel without any emotion whatsoever and drew your weapon in his direction. He couldn't bring himself to lift his Keyblade up against you, but once you closed in on your attack he had no choice but to block the blow and push you backwards with all his strength.
'[Y/N]! Snap out of it! Don't you recognize me?!" Axel shouted. You didn't acknowledge him and continued out your assault, raising your weapon over your head and preparing for another attack. Axel used the magic of his Keyblade and split it into two flaming chakrams and let them hover next to him for a moment. "Please, don't make me do this!" Ignoring his plead, you lunged towards him, giving him no choice but to fire back. You were able to knock one of the chakrams out of the way, but the second one sliced your upper arm and burned through the sleeves of your leather coat. Screaming in pain, you held your arm tightly and assessed the damage: the chakram left a good burn mark on you, and a slight bit of blood started trickling down.
Axel froze in remorse. The last thing he ever wanted to do was to hurt you. Tears filled his eyes as he watched you struggle to pick up your weapon again. "[Y/N], I know you're still somewhere in there! Please... tell me what happened! I can save you!"
"I can tell you what happened to her," a voice came from behind. Axel swirled around and saw Xemnas and another hooded figure standing next to him. The second figure was much smaller and held a Keyblade identical to Sora's. There was something familiar about this person... but Axel couldn't put his finger on it.
"While you were off training with the old magician and that weak little girl, your precious [Y/N] was captured by Master Xehanort and forced her to become one of his pawns in the grand scheme of achieving the ultimate X-blade. I guess she should have joined you in your trainings as well, Also-ran."
"No... [Y/N]. You gotta break free from this, I know you can!" Axel tried to talk reason into you, but it seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. Xemnas held a hand up to you, signaling a cease fire while he approached Axel.
"Any last words for your superior?"
"Let me think... how about: You were NEVER my superior!"
"Ever the rogue pawn. Knocked out early from the game. It seems the task to eliminate you once and for all has fallen onto my shoulders," Xemnas sneered. He snapped his fingers and a black dome encircled himself and Axel inside with lasers pointing in each direction. With another snap, Xemnas unleashed the lasers at Axel and continued to shoot over and over. It was in this moment that you started to gain power over the darkness Xehanort had captured you in; seeing Axel screaming in pain woke something up inside you. Your golden irises changed back to their original [e/c] color, the light that was buried deep inside you had smothered the darkness that controlled you for good.
Blinking a few times, you finally gained full consciousness back, only to see your beloved in grave danger. "Axel!" You shrieked and ran towards him, raising your weapon and throwing it at Xemnas. With his free hand, Xemnas stopped your weapon in midair and fired it back at you. You were able to duck just in time, only to have it graze your cheek as you spun out of the way and fall down to the ground. Your hands scraped on the rough dirt of the Keyblade Graveyard beneath you, but you didn't let it faze you as you got back up. You conjured a large Firaga spell at Xemnas, hitting him square in the chest and sending him flying backwards. The lasers stopped just in time for you to catch Axel in your arms as he collapsed.
"A fire spell. That's my girl," Axel grunted as he tried to sit up.
"Axel, I'm so sorry! I was too weak to fight against Xehanort. But you brought me back... you made me stronger. I won't leave your side ever again, I promise. I love you." You began crying, ashamed of falling victim to Xehanort. Axel reached up and cupped your cheek with your hand, rubbing the tears that fell from your eyes away with his gloved finger.
"You're here," he sighed with relief. "It's really you, [Y/N]..."
"How touching," Xemnas choked, still recovering from the fire spell that caught him off guard. "But we're not finished here. The two of you will succumb to the darkness, once and for all!"
It was then when a bright light shot up somewhere nearby, causing a shadow to fall from the sky and draw a line between Xemnas and the others. Simultaneously, the figure next to him drew out their Keyblade and struck Xemnas before joining the rest of the group. The dust began to settle, and soon you and Axel were staring at the backs of Roxas and Xion. They were finally back.
"Roxas! Xion!" You both exclaimed.
"Our turn," Roxas said.
"This cannot be!" Xemnas growled.
Sora ran out from behind you and Axel, drawing his Keyblade and joining Roxas and Xion. "[Y,N], you and Axel should go rest," Xion said. "We'll fight in your place."
You nodded and wrapped Axel's arm around your shoulder to lift him off the ground, walking him out of the battlegrounds and into the dark corridors of the maze. The two of you sat back down once you were out of harms way to take a few breaths. Kneeling beside Axel, you checked his body to see if there were any life-threatening injuries to him, but everything seemed to be minor burns and cuts from the looks of it.
Axel just kept staring into your eyes the whole time. He was so relieved that they weren't that eery golden hue anymore and back to the way they should be. The cut from your weapon on your face started to bleed, and he raised a finger to wipe the blood away. You grabbed his hand and pressed it up against your face, crying once again.
"I'll never forgive myself—"
"Don't. Don't do that to yourself, [Y/n], please. This was not your fault at all."
"If I had been stronger, none of this would have happened Axel!"
"You're the strongest person I know, [Y/N]. This is Xehanort we're talking here. The guy doesn't play by the rules. Got it memorized? What matters is you're back, and we're together again. I'd like to see him try and tear us apart again," he smirked.
Shaking your head, you jumped into Axel's arms and hugged him around his waist and sobbed. Axel saw the burn mark on your arm and noted that it was definitely going to leave a scar. Regret filled him again, and he too started to cry. "I'm so sorry," he whispered.
"Are you kidding?" You sat up and sniffled a little, giving him a soft smile. "You brought me back, Axel. You have nothing to be sorry for. Even if you had burned me a thousand times, I'm still forever thankful to you." Taking his face in both of your hands, you collided your lips with his and kissed him deeply. "You're my light, Axel."
Axel kissed you back and smiled, happy that his girl was back where she belonged. "And you're my light, [Y/N]. Always."
