Today was a rough day. To be honest, rough didn't even begin to describe it. It was a nightmare.
The leader of the Organization, Xemnas, verbally bashed you in front of the entire Organization in the Round Room when everyone returned from their designated missions. Granted, you did kind of deserve it on the count of disobeying direct orders from Xigbar. You knew better especially since Xigbar is Xemnas's right-hand man, but you had your priorities straight: a swarm of Shadows were about to attack a family during your recon mission in Radiant Garden, so of course you had to eliminate those mindless creatures. Right?
"Do you realize what you almost did today? Why on earth would you even risk your mission to save some defenseless Somebodies?"
"The exact reason why you just said: they were defenseless!" Your lips quivered as you spoke up, the sharp hint of tears welling in your eyes.
"You nearly exposed our Organization! Secrecy is the only reason we can accomplish our missions without compromising Kingdom Hearts!" Xemnas's voice boomed through the Round Room. "We needed their hearts!"
"You said you needed the hearts of those who harnessed darkness! What darkness could have hold on the hearts of an innocent family?!"
"Do you DARE to challenge my knowledge on this??"
"[Y/O/N]!" A whisper cut through the silence. You turned to see Axel staring at you from across the room with his eyes wide, subtly shaking his head signaling you to stop. It was then that the tears finally streamed down your face. Great; not only had you just been shamed in front of all your fellow members, but now you were full-on crying in front of them. This was humiliating.
"Disobeying direct orders and endangering our very existence is against everything the Organization stands for. [Y/O/N], you are suspended from all missions for one week."
"A whole week!? Are you kidding—?"
"Furthermore," Xemnas hissed through his teeth, "you are on house arrest throughout the entirety of your suspension. Do I make myself clear?"
You meekly nodded your head and instantly disappeared into a dark corridor leading straight to your room. Throwing yourself on the bed, you sobbed away your frustrations. All you wanted to do was save someone from danger, to know what it felt like to be a hero. Being in the Organization, you couldn't help but shake the feeling that your actions weren't exactly heroic, no matter how much Xemnas and the others deemed it so.
A soft knock came at your door. "[Y/O/N], it's me. Can I come in?"
"Yes," you whispered, wiping the tears from your face.
Axel walked in with his hands behind his back, a weak half-smile on his face. "I-uh, I brought you some of your favorite snacks over."
"Thanks," you mumbled. Plopping back down on your bed, Axel sat down next to you and wrapped an arm around your shoulder as you continued to sob.
"It's just not fair! I was just trying to do something right for a change," you whimpered. "None of this Kingdom Hearts bull that everyone keeps droning on about."
"I know you meant well, but you gotta face the facts. Xigbar was the wrong person to go against a direct order. You know he snitches on everyone in the Organization."
"I don't care about Xigbar or the fact that he told Xemnas! I just wanted to do something good! And on top of all this, Xemnas embarrassed me in front of everyone! How am I supposed to show my face anymore?!" Clutching onto Axel's coat, your tears were now uncontrollable as they seeped into the leather fabric.
This wasn't the first time you've cried in front of Axel, and you knew it wouldn't be the last either. Even when you were a Somebody, you were always got emotional no matter how big or small the reason was. One night, Axel confided in you and said he used to be the same way, until he became a Nobody and didn't have the feelings to express anymore. But why did you, despite having no heart? It was a mystery to the two of you, and quite honestly you didn't have the time or energy to figure out why.
Axel swung his legs up onto the bed and laid back, bringing you down with him in a warm embrace. By now, he knew exactly how to care for you: let you sob out your anger and sadness until you wore yourself out, all the while holding you tightly and stroking soft patterns on your back with his fingertips. It was soothing for you, like how your mother used to calm you down when you were a child. Once you were calm again did Axel speak up.
"It could be worse, ya know?"
"Oh really, how so?" Sarcasm drenched your voice as you sniffed away the remaining tears.
"A whole week off. You get to relax and recoup while the rest of us carry on with our begrudging missions. You. Are. One. Lucky. Duck." With each word, he gently poked you in your sides, making you giggle.
"I'll be bored out of my mind. Doesn't sound lucky to me."
"I'll keep you company. Promise. I'll finish my missions and come straight here. Roxas and Xion will understand about the tower. And, I'll even bring you ice cream every day. What do you say? Ice cream with a side of Axel," he winked.
"Sounds like the best punishment I've ever gotten."
