Sitting in his usual spot on top of the Twilight Town clock tower, Axel gazed out at the brilliant orange sunset lost in his thoughts. He tapped his foot anxiously as he pulled his phone out for the third time in five minutes to his group chat with Roxas and Xion.

A: Hey, you guys busy? I need help with something...

R: No, we can meet you. Usual place?

A: Yeah

X: Everything okay?

A: Yeah I just need to pick your brain about something

X: Give us 20 minutes!

That was half an hour ago. Roxas and Xion were known to run late from time to time, but today wasn't the day; Axel's anxiety caused his patience to run low. The small black box that was in his sweater pocket started feeling heavier by the minute. Just as he was about to send another message the door to the clock tower opened and out came Roxas and Xion, carrying three sea-salt ice creams.

"Sorry about that, the line for ice cream was longer than we expected," Roxas said and handed Axel a pop.

"That's the only reason I'll allow your excuse for running late," Axel said.

"Someone's in a cranky mood," Xion laughed. "What's going on?"

Axel didn't talk for a long minute, staring at his ice cream as it started melting in his hand. Roxas and Xion looked at each other, now officially worried.

"You know, you can talk to us about anything," Xion said to break the silence.

"Yeah, we're here for you," Roxas added.

Reaching into his pocket, Axel pulled out a small black box and held it carefully out for his two friends to see. Both of their eyes grew wide, switching back and forth from Axel and the box.

"Axel, is that—?"

"Is that what I think it is??"

"Yeah..." Axel opened the small box to reveal a diamond engagement ring. It was white gold with a small diamond in the center and two smaller rubies on either side. It was simple but elegant, absolutely perfect for his girl.

"Oh my god!" Xion squealed. "Axel, this is amazing, congratulations!"

"How are you going to ask her?" Roxas asked.

"That's the thing, I don't know. I don't want to do anything too flashy, but nothing too simple either. That's why I need your help," Axel said. "I'm really drawing a blank here."

The three of them sat in silence together, thinking of ideas on how to help.

"Oh! I've got it. You know her favorite book, right?"

"[Y/F/B], yeah. I think she's read it at least three times since we've met. Wait, don't make me reenact anything from it," Axel said nervously.

"Awww but I'd pay to see that!" Roxas laughed.

"No, no!" Xion laughed. "Not what I was thinking. Here's an idea..."

"Axel, what is this big surprise?" You stood in the doorway to your shared apartment as you watched Axel run around hectically, grabbing food and a blanket and stowing them in a small basket.

"If I told you, it wouldn't be a surprise now would it?" Axel called over his shoulder as he grabbed a bottle of wine from the storage rack above the fridge. "Okay, we're good to go! On to the park!" He grabbed your hand a little too rough as he swung the door behind him, slamming it so hard that you heard something back inside your apartment fall over.

"Are you okay...?" You raised an eyebrow at him in worry.

"Uh, yeah! Totally cool! Let's get going!"

The whole walk over, Axel seemed really on edge. This wasn't like him at all, and you were really starting to wonder what was making him so panicky. When you finally reached your favorite spot in the park, it took Axel at least five minutes to lay out the blanket until he deemed it okay to sit down on. He struggled opening the bottle of wine so much that when he finally got it uncorked, a quarter of the bottle spilled out all over his pants and onto the blanket. His hands were shaking slightly as he poured the wine, rattling the glass as he gave you a nervous smile. As worried as you were, you couldn't help but giggle at his clumsiness.

"Okay, seriously, what's going on? This isn't like you," you said.

Axel took a deep breath and reached back into the picnic basket. He pulled out a perfectly wrapped present, decorated with shiny silver wrapping paper and a red lace bow. You were completely thrown off guard and gasped with delight.

"I saw this the other day, and I thought of you," he said slowly. "I know it's really special to you, so I wanted you to to have it."

Carefully unwrapping the gift, you saw the all-too familiar artwork reveal itself as you continued to tear off the silver wrapping paper. It was your favorite book, [Y/F/B], in brand new condition. Your copy, having read it so many times, was starting to wear and fade in color.

"Axel, I don't know what to say!"

"Uhm, can you... can you turn to page 8?"

Eyeing him carefully, you did as you were told and turned a few pages into the book. Your heart skipped a beat and you almost dropped the book when you saw that the pages were hollowed out in the center almost all the way through the whole book, creating a small square. Inside the square was a diamond ring.

You slowly looked back up at Axel, who shifted from his spot on the blanket and was on one knee in front of you. "[Y/N]. From the moment I saw you, I knew you were the one for me. For the first time in my entire life, you made me feel like I had a heart. And if you'll have me, I promise to spend the rest of my life showing you how much you mean to me. So... will you... will you marry me?"

Snapping out of your stunned state, you jumped up and threw your arms around his neck, laughing and crying at the same time. "Yes! Of course, Axel!"

A huge wave of relief filled Axel and he could finally breathe for the first time in over a week. He hugged you tightly back and held you for a few moments before reaching down to slip the ring on your finger. Axel's phone went off with a text notification, and he looked down to see a message from Roxas.

R: Soooo??? Any news?!

Axel rolled his eyes and looked at you. You wiped the tears from each other's wet faces before opening the camera app on his phone to take a selfie, posing with your beautiful new ring. Barely five seconds passed before the group chat blew up with congratulations and excited messages from both Xion and Roxas.

"I swear, they're like puppies sometimes. Get them excited about something and they'll never stop!" Axel laughed.

"Laugh all you want, I know for a fact you're feeling the exact same way they are right now," you smiled as you poked his cheek.

"Yeah, you got me there," Axel said as he intertwined his fingers with yours, kissing your left hand. "Can you blame me?"
