A Perfect Evening

The clock tower perched at the top of Twilight Town rang out in the distance. 6:00pm, finally. Taking up an extra shift at the town's one and only coffee shop wasn't exactly how you planned your day out, but you could use the extra hours of pay (not to mention more tips). After a long day of running around on your feet, all you wanted to do was run home, slip into a hot bath and crawl into bed.

Instead, you spent your entire walk home from work thinking about what needed to be done still. Cook dinner, clean the house no doubt from any catastrophes, make lunches for the next day. Sighing to yourself, you realized there really wasn't much time for 'me time' before you'd be too exhausted to do anything else.

Turning your key in the keyhole, you heard laughter and shushing from the other side of the door accompanied with your dog Ollie's playful barking. When you entered, you found your entire living room an elaborate mess of pillows and blankets forming a very lopsided fort. Your eyes fell on the very prominent figure who's head stuck out like a sore thumb underneath one of the blankets, no doubt belonging to Axel. Giggles could be heard from underneath, as if trying to suppress themselves from being any louder.

"Hmmmm, I wonder where everyone is," you thought out loud. Playing along, you circled the fort, 'oblivious' to where your targets were hiding.

"MOMMY!"

"Serafine, you scared me!" You let out a loud gasp as your four year old daughter, dressed in a purple ballerina outfit and donned only one sock, jumped up into your arms and clung tightly onto you.

Axel crawled out from underneath the blankets, greeting you with a kiss on your cheek. "Had to keep her entertained somehow. It was either this or teaching her how to skateboard with Roxas."

"Well, this," you motioned with your chin, "was the better option. Thank you, Axel."

"Momma, do you wanna join me and Daddy in our blanket fort?" Serafine asked. She gave you the biggest puppy dog eyes she could muster. She takes after her father too well, you thought.

"Pizza's already ordered," Axel said. "Serafine and I were just about to read a couple books when you walked in."

"Pwease Momma?"

"Of course I would love to join you both," you smiled and rubbed your nose against Serafine's. Out of excitement, she started to squirm in your arms before you set her down, racing back into the fort and out of sight. Crawling underneath the top blanket, you discovered an entire afternoon's activities sprawled out on the floor: drawings of both Serafine's and Axel's using the crayons Namine gave her for her birthday, empty candy wrappers and bags of chips, a collection of Serafine's favorite books, and a few stray dog toys that Ollie managed to hide under some pillows.

As the two of you curled up together, Axel got on all fours and climbed back in, the top of the blanket smushing his spiky hair flat down around his face. You couldn't help but laugh at the sight, earning an amused glare from your husband. Ollie pounced in shortly afterwards with a squeaky toy in his mouth, and finally the whole family was together in your perfect little world away from the world.

A few hours later, the three of you were still snuggled up against a large pile of pillows, Serafine tucked between both you and Axel with Ollie's head resting on her lap. As you read one of her favorite stories, Serafine's eyes started to droop until she was fully asleep, the comfort of your soothing voice and her father's radiating heat sending her off into a deep slumber. Being as careful as you could, you lifted Serafine into your arms and carried her all the way into her bedroom, making sure not to disturb her from any peaceful dreams.

Quietly closing the door, you turned to Axel and let out a long sigh. "That was the most perfect family night."

"Yeah, sure was," he grinned. "Buuut, I think I know how to make it even better."

"Oh, really?"

"Why don't you join me in my blanket fort, madame, in the bedroom?" He held out his hand and gave you a cheeky smile, making your ears burn hotly.

"How could I ever say no to that?"
