I'll Protect You

It was supposed to be a simple mission.

As part of your training with Axel and Kairi, Merlin had tasked the three of you to venture for the first time to another world since arriving at the Magic Forest a few weeks ago. The mission was to work together with your newly gained Keyblade abilities to take out a swarm of Heartless by the Old Mansion in Twilight Town. It would be the first time any of you would actually fight Heartless instead of sparring and facing off against each other in practice battles. What could go wrong?

A lot.

The three of you took out the Heartless that were overtaking the forest and the foyer leading up to the mansion with ease. When you were about to head back to town, an all-too familiar sound crept up from behind, and before you all knew it, you were surrounded by Dusks and even more Heartless. A few Reaper Nobodies appeared before a dark portal opened up, and out walked a hooded figure.

"Axel, it's been a while." The figure lowered his hood and a man with long pink hair stood before the three of you.

"Marluxia," Axel sneered.

Another figured walked out of the portal, much shorter than Marluxia. She lowered her hood and gave a wicked smile before laughing.

"Axel, sweetheart, what's the matter? Hanging around with these losers nowadays? Where's your pride?"

"You're one to talk, Larxene. What do you two want?"

"There was once a time where our Superior ordered you to take care of traitors, Axel. Those orders were used against us, and you connived to followed suit. It seems that the tables have turned against you," Marluxia said and took a step forward, raising his Scythe. With that, the Heartless and Nobodies instantly charged, and the three of you were thrown into a melee.

Working together, you and Kairi stock back to back and swung your Keyblades around and used your strongest magic spells. Kairi was incredibly gifted with healing magic, so she made sure to keep everyone's stamina up. Axel was a few yards away, using his Keyblade to turn into flaming chakrams and thew them towards a few Reapers. Marluxia and Larxene both waited before splitting up in a pincher move against Axel. Axel saw the attack coming and split his Keyblade into two again, sending a chakram in each direction. Marluxia easily deflected the assault with his Scythe, but Larxene wasn't so lucky and got hit square in the chest with a fireball.

As she regained her strength, Larxene turned to focus her attention on you and Kairi. The two of you kept dodging her quick attacks, occasionally getting zapped by her lightning strikes. Larxene concentrated on zapping you the most, making you yelp out in pain.

"Aww, looks like Axel's little doll can't take a few shocks! You haven't changed a bit since the Organization, [Y/N]. Still so weak and helpless!" Larxene lunged her lightning claws and pierced your side, making you scream out in pain. Kairi instantly swiped Larxene's legs and knocked her off her feet before sending her flying backwards with a water spell.

"[Y/N]! Are you okay?" Kairi said and placed her Keyblade above you, casting a cure spell.

"Fine," you gritted your teeth. "We need to help Axel!"

The sound of Kairi's Keyblade clashing with Larxene's claws sounded, and she struggled slightly to hold her off. "Go! I can take her!" Kairi yelled.

You got back to your feet and ran towards Axel, who was still fighting off Marluxia with all his strength. You sent a fire spell from behind, catching Marluxia completely off guard as you quickly joined Axel by his side. The two of you ran towards Marluxia for another attack, but he countered the both of you with a swoop of his Scythe, sending a gust of wind and sharp rose petals flying towards you. The gust separated the two of you once again and Marluxia ran up towards Axel, Scythe above his head ready to strike. Before you could think, you jumped up and ran as fast as you could between the two of them.

"AXEL!"

Marluxia's Scythe came down hard against you, a sharp pain cutting across your abdomen. Axel watched everything in slow motion: your Keyblade falling from your hand, your knees buckling underneath you as you fell to the ground clutching your stomach as tears fell from your eyes. Something snapped inside him, and Axel launched an all-out fire attack on Marluxia, sending chakrams and fire balls in his direction and finally striking with his Keyblade in full form. Marluxia was sent flying backwards until his back hit the iron fence that gated the mansion and was knocked unconscious. Larxene stopped her assault on Kairi to run towards Marluxia, opening up another dark portal.

"This isn't over!" Larxene shrieked before the two of them disappeared.

Axel didn't waste time and ran back to where you laid on the grass, still clutching your stomach. "Hey, hey, you're okay! You're okay!" He kept repeating the words over and over as he frantically searched for your wound. "Kairi! Call for help!"

You were in and out of consciousness, grasping a few words Axel kept saying here and there while you fought off the darkness. You felt his hands pressed against your wound, attempting to stop the bleeding. He kept whispering "stay with me!" as you struggled to keep your eyes open, and before you knew it sleep completely enveloped you.

The sound of birds chirping started to wake you from your deep slumber. Slowly opening your eyes, you found yourself in your bedroom back in Merlin's world. The pain in your stomach started to come back, and you noticed your torso was wrapped in multiple white bandages. Looking around, you noticed Axel with his head on the bed close to your side, holding one of your hands as he slept soundly. You softly let go so you could run your fingers through his spiky hair to wake him up.

Axel stirred awake, taking in a deep breath before turning his head towards you. When your eyes met, he practically jumped up from his spot and kicked the chair behind him. "[Y/N]!"

"Hey sleepyhead," you whispered.

He grabbed your hand with both of his, tears falling from his eyes. "Why-why did you do that? I almost lost you!"

You shrugged to the best of your ability, slightly wincing in pain. "I had to. I couldn't just stand there. You would have done the same."

Axel let out a light laugh and shook his head, bringing your hand to his lips and gave it a kiss. "Don't ever do that again, [Y/N]. I was so scared... I don't know what I'd do if you'd..."

"Shhh, it's okay. I'm here, thanks to you and Kairi."

The two of you sat in silence, foreheads pressed together as you listened to each others steady breathing. "I promise you," he whispered, "I'll never let you down again. I'll always be here to protect you."
