The alarm clock on your nightstand read 3:27AM. A cool breeze blew the curtains lightly in the air, the sound of crickets chirped happily all throughout Radiant Garden. The moon shone through the small window across the bed where you and Axel slept peacefully.

Well, at least Axel slept peacefully. You on the other hand started tossing and turning, lightly whimpering and fisting the sheets between your fingers. It was only a few moments later that you jolted up from your bed with a shriek. You felt Axel stir awake next to you as you tried to catch your breath, your heart leaping inside your chest like the finale of a fireworks show. A cold sweat formed on your brow and soaked through your shirt, clinging to your skin as memories of the nightmare you just had already began to fade.

"[Y/N], babe, what is it?"

"S-sorry. I didn't mean to wake you, go back to sleep," you panted.

Axel reached over to the light on his nightstand and flicked the light on, illuminating the tiny bedroom. He sat up in bed and wrapped his arms around your torso, resting his chin on your shoulder. Feeling the rhythmic beating of his heart against your back helped steady your breathing, and you felt yourself begin to calm down.

"I'm fine, really," you whispered.

"No, you're not. Take another deep breath," he said soothingly. "Do you remember anything this time?"

This was your third nightmare in a week. It really wasn't like you to have that many in such a short period of time, nor have you ever woken up so frightened before. You shook your head softly, trying your best to remember something, anything at all from whatever it was that you dreamt about.

"Nothing at all. It sounds so stupid..." you murmured.

"It's not stupid. Dreams are weird that way. Half the time you don't even know you're dreaming the night away. But whatever it is, it's sure giving you a good scare."

You placed your hands on top of Axel's and interlaced your fingers with his, concentrating on the warmth of his skin. Axel kissed you softly on your shoulder, his lips tracing the dream lines on your skin that were left behind by your bedsheets. His touch sent shivers down your spine and through your toes.

Axel tapped your stomach, indicating that he was going to lie back down and take you with him. You followed his lead and stretched back down, curling up against his chest and tangling your legs between his. When he reached behind him to turn off the light, you asked him to keep it on a little longer.

"I'm not ready to fall back asleep yet," you said.

"You say that now but you'll be out in two seconds," Axel chuckled.

"I'm wide awake now."

"[Y/N], are you afraid to fall back asleep?"

"I just don't want to have that nightmare again."

Axel brushed a few strands of hair off your face and tucked them behind your ear, smiling. "I'm right here with you, babe. You have nothing to be scared of. Whatever it is, I'll protect you from it. Werewolves, zombies, giant Heartless the size of the castle, you name it! You're safe with me, okay? I promise."

You couldn't help but laugh at Axel's silliness, which you found more comforting than all the crickets outside your window or the scent of the Castle Gardens wafting into your bedroom. Staring into his emerald eyes that shone in the moon's light, you smiled softly at him and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.

"You know, if you need help falling asleep I can always sing to you," Axel smirked.

"Oh God, no! Please don't—!"

"Blackbird singing in the dead of night—"

"You're soo off-key!"

"Take these broken wings and learn to fly—"

"I'm closing my eyes now!"

"All your life—"

"Goodnight, Axel!!"
