A New Addition

"Ollie, hold still for a second!"

Fastening the folded piece of paper through your dog's tags, your fingers started to tremble slightly despite the enormous smile on your face. After a week of hiding morning sickness and lying to Axel that you came down with food poisoning, today was finally the day you were going to tell him everything.

You were pregnant.

It wasn't a planned pregnancy, but you were nonetheless overjoyed when three pregnancy tests confirmed your suspicions. The only thing that worried you was how Axel was going to react. Would he be happy? Surprised? Scared? What if he decides he's not ready to be a father?

You pushed the negative thoughts away as you heard the front door to your shared apartment open. 'There's nothing to worry about', you said to yourself. 'He loves you. And he's going to love this baby. Everything is going to be alright.'

Ollie jumped out of your arms and zoomed into the living room to greet Axel from a long day of training. You hesitated in the bedroom as you heard Ollie jump up and down on Axel; his laughs echoed throughout the apartment and you couldn't help the happy tears form in your eyes. One day soon, your tiny family of three was going to grow into four, and your heart nearly burst from excitement.

"Hey, boy!" Axel was now on the floor playing with your over-enthusiastic pup, giving him belly rubs. "Whatcha got there?"

Your heart skipped a beat as you heard Axel take the small piece of paper off of Ollie's collar. There was a long silence, and the words that you had written kept repeating in your head over and over. 'You became my daddy one year ago, and now you'll become one again. Coming this summer <3' It was cheesy and you knew it, but with your mind all over the place it was the best you could come up with.

When Axel still didn't make a sound, you poked your head around the corner and looked into the living room. He was kneeling on the floor, still grasping the paper between his fingers tightly as Ollie sniffed every inch of Axel as he could, determining where his master had been throughout the day. Axel's eyes finally met yours as you walked fully into the living room, his lips quivering.

"You're pregnant?"

All you could do was nod your head slowly, trying to gauge Axel's reactions. He continued to kneel on the ground; at this point you were sure a mouse could knock him over without breaking a sweat. When his eyes met yours again, they were welling with tears that overflowed and spilled down his face.

"I'm going to be a dad??"

"Yes!"

Despite his knees weak from the overwhelming excitement, Axel jumped up and half-ran to you, embracing you tightly. Tears fell on the top of your head as he started to laugh and cry simultaneously, and you soon followed suit. Kneeling back down once again, Axel laid a cheek against your stomach and gave it a long, gentle kiss. You weren't showing just yet, but the idea that a child, your child, was growing inside you made his heart soar. He never thought this day would come, and now that it finally did, he vowed to himself that he would never let anything bad happen to you or to this baby.

"I bet it's going to be a boy," Axel said as he caressed your stomach.

"Axel, you don't know that yet! It's too early to tell," you laughed.

"Nah, it's going to be a boy. I know it."

"Which means you'll be teaching him to be a prankster?"

"I can neither confirm nor deny this theory of yours," he winked.

"Axel!" You let out a laugh as Axel wiggled his eyebrows at you, flashing his signature smirk. He quickly swooped you in his arms and carried you bridal-style back into the bedroom and laid you down on the bed before settling down next to you.

"I just can't believe this," Axel smiled. Sneaking his hand under your shirt, he began tracing small patterns on your stomach. "In a few months, everything's going to change."

"Sure will. You ready for this?"

"Are you kidding me? With you by my side? I'm so ready."
