Connor came down the steps, rubbing his eyes. He had woken up from a bad dream, and he needed to get some water to clear his head. He yawn, closing his eyes as he entered the kitchen. When he opened his eyes, he spotted his daughter, Liz, sitting at the table with a Redbull and a pile of books surrounding her. She was muttering something to herself, but Connor couldn't make out what she was saying.

"Liz, it's four in the morning...is everything okay?" He asked, rubbing his eyes again.

"Everything's great! Why wouldn't it be great? It's great!" She answered, slamming a physics book shut. Connor noticed the dark circles under her eyes. "I've just got three more chapters of calculus, a physics problem set, a history quiz, and two pages on floral imagery in Flowers for Algernon, which is like...duh...Everything's so under control, it's just so...calm."

"Honey, you need to take some time for yourself." Connor paused to think. "I'm gonna go have sex with your father."

"Great, thanks..." Liz tried to not think about what her dad just said. "I'm so glad I know that."

Connor trudged up the stairs, his feet dragging, Liz gagged, and opened an Math textbook. She got out a sheet of notebook paper, dreading to do her homework.

Just another day...Liz told herself. Just another day.

Alana stepped into her son's room, holding a twenty-dollar bill in the air. Her son, Mark, was sitting at his computer, typing furiously. She cleared her throat. When he didn't answer, she cleared her throat again. Mark looked up, his face a deer-in-the-headlights when he saw the twenty in his mom's hands.

"So you just decided not to eat last night?" Alana asked. Mark slowly shut his laptop, facing his mom.

"Oh, I'm- um, I wasn't hungry..."

"You're a junior in high school, Mark...You need to be able to order dinner for yourself if I'm at work. You can do it all online now. You don't have to talk to anyone on the phone. I know you don't like the phone." Alana turned her head towards the door, where her 5-year-old daughter, Angel, was sneaking into her and Zoe's bedroom. "Angel Dumott Beck-Murphy, you get back into bed right now! Mommy is asleep!"

"Sorry!" Angel whispered. She went back to her room. When she knew Alana wasn't listening, she crept back into the hallway to her moms' bedroom.

"Sorry about that...Where was I? Oh...you need to learn how to order. It doesn't require a lot of talking."

"Okay, but see, that's not true actually. You have to talk to the delivery person when they come to the door. Then they have to make change. You have to stand there while it's silent and they're counting the change and..."

"This is what you're supposed to be working on, Evan. With Dr. Sherman? Talking to people. Engaging with people. Not running away from people." Alana stepped forward, ruffling her son's hair. "I just hate to see you like this..."

"You're right. I'm going to be a lot better." Mark nodded.

"No, I know. I know you are. And that's why I made you an appointment with Dr. Mendel for this afternoon. I'll pick you up right after school." Mark's eyes went wide.

"I already have an appointment next week," he stammered.

"And I thought maybe you could use something a little sooner. Have you been writing those letters he wants you to do? The letters yourself? The pep talks? 'Dear Mark Beck-Murphy . This is going to be a good day and here's why.' Have you been doing those?" Alana asked.

"I started writing one. I'll finish it at school."

Those letters are important, honey. They're going to help you build your confidence. Seize the day!"

"I guess..."

"I don't want another year of you sitting at home on your computer every Friday night, telling me you have no friends."

"I have Liz!" Mark protested.

"I know..." Alana stared at her son hopelessly. "Well, get ready for school. I'll be in the kitchen if you need anything."
