"I'm freezing!" Evan said.

"We should show them around town, though!" Ms. Hansen said.

"Mom, it's freezing." Evan wrapped himself tighter in his blanket. Even though there was heat in the car, Evan still felt like his bones were popsicles. Connor laughed at him. Mrs. Murphy smiled. Ms. Hansen sighed.

"Do you want to just stay home and take care of the dogs?" She asked. "You don't have to go if you don't want to." She knew Evan might be making up the cold part, because she knew about his anxiety and how it made him feel to be in public.

"More than anything."

"Connor won't be there," Ms. Hansen said.

"Oh, I will!"

"Do you two need anything?" Mrs. Murphy asked.

"You don't have to stay, Connor. The town is cute and there's tons of bakeries and cute shop! You should go!" Evan said. "I've been there plenty of times."

"Well, I mean, I'll stay with you. We can go later if we want." Connor shrugged.

Evan felt his stomach tighten.

"Well, you'll be by yourselves for a few hours. Town is a couple of hours away." Ms. Hansen looked back at them through her mirror. She pulled into a driveway. "Well, here we are!"

"It's not much, but my grandparents used to live here. Then they moved away after they retired and never sold the place," Evan commented.

Everyone got out of the car and lugged suitcases into the house. Evan and Connor's room had bunk beds with plaid quilts and a window with plaid curtains. The room smelled just like Christmas.

"So, uh, top or bottom?" Connor asked. (Yes i did this on purpose to make the joke. You can hate me now)

"Uh, whatever you want. I usually pick bottom." Evan set his stuff on the bottom bunk. "But if you want to-"

"I was actually hoping you'd say bottom."

"Oh, uh, ok."

"Evan, Connor. We're leaving. There's some food in the bags, but don't eat too much because we're eating when we come back!" Ms. Hansen stuck her head in the room Connor and Evan were in. "I left a list of emergency numbers in case you need them, but you've got all our contacts."

"Ok, mom," Evan replied.

"Oh, and don't try open the windows. They're frozen shut. We'll get them fixed later."

"Thanks, Ms. Hansen," Connor said.

"Well. I think that's about it. There's movies if you two want to watch something. But other than that, just be good!" She said. "See you in a few hours!" She left. Evan and Connor began unpacking their suitcases. Evan set a small stuffed dog on the bed.

"That's cute." Connor pointed at the plushie.

Evan's cheeks dusted over with a blush that he quickly tried to brush off, responding with a soft, "Whatever." Even if Connor didn't directly call him cute, he still felt his heart lurch and the unmistakable flutter of butterflies in his stomach. (Say the last seven words three times fast)

Connor, sensing Evan's sudden change in mood to the shy persona he adapts to when flustered (which he absolutely adores and therefore tries to make happen as possible), quickly smiled and said, "Hey, I like stuffed animals too!"

He pulled a dinosaur out of his bag grandly, making a show of it and causing the shorter boy to smile softly and give a small laugh.

Evan heard a noise out the window, and he turned and looked to see if a squirrel or a bird had rustled in the trees covered with snow. He saw the car start, lighting up and letting exhaust out of a pipe.

"They just left," Evan said as he watched the car pull out of the driveway.

Back to the story)

"Yep. I'm gonna go see what we have in the kitchen," Connor said, leaving the room.

Evan finished unpacking. He left the room and went to the kitchen. He found Connor opening a bag of Lay's Chips.

"So, whatcha wanna do?" Connor asked, winking jokingly at him.

"Hold on, I'm really cold. Lemme grab a sweater." Evan went back to his room and changed into a hoodie. It was black, and it had the logo of his favorite album on it.

Evan looked into the mirror. His hair was messed up and he thought he looked...different? He tried to fix his hair, but it didn't look any better. He felt something rise in his chest. He took a deep breath.

Connor wouldn't like you. You look like this.

"Shut up," he told himself. "I look fine."

He stopped looking at himself in the mirror and walked to the living room. Connor hadn't been in the kitchen when he passed, so he assumed Connor was in the living room.

But he wasn't.

Evan felt his stomach flip-flop.

Connor had disappeared.
