"Why, sweetie?" Kath asked, sitting on the bed with him. The little boy was only wearing his underwear, but the house was warm, the lamps illuminating the room without the harsh light from overhead. Kath had already drawn the curtains, her main focus now on Noah as he clung onto her jacket. He didn't feel comfortable hugging her, but he found the scent of the jacket comforting.
"The policeman took him away," Noah mumbled, his voice muffled into the jacket.
"He wasn't bad tonight, Noah... he helped me when I needed someone and he doesn't even know who I am," Kath said and Noah sniffled.
"But the policeman don't take away good people."
"They just want to talk to him about what happened, sweetie... why he was there in the first place. He isn't in any trouble, okay? I'll make sure of it. We'll see him tomorrow." She promised, running her fingers through his hair to comfort him and it made her heart swell, seeing him close his eyes contently at the affection. "Let's get you in bed! You must be exhausted, it's nearly midnight." Kath slid off the bed, pulling back the duvet. "And that jacket is a little too flowery for a big boy like you, why don't I get you a t-shirt of mine to wear?" Kath offered and Noah cracked a small smile.
"A big boy t-shirt?" He asked and Kath laughed, which made his smile grow. He liked her laugh.
"The best big boy t-shirt I can find." She assured him. "Stay there, sweetie, I'll get you a shirt and put your clothes in the washing machine," Kath said and she walked out of the bedroom and downstairs with Noah's clothes, throwing them in the washing machine and switching it on before heading upstairs to her room and she dug around in her closet for her old t-shirts that she often wore to bed and she picked out a Looney Tunes one that she'd gotten from the guys' section at WalMart and she picked something else up before heading through to the spare bedroom to see Noah exactly where she'd left him, sat in the middle of the king-sized bed. "Here, is this 'big boy' enough for you?" She asked with a smirk, holding the shirt out and he giggled, nodding his head and he stood up on the bed as Kath helped him get his head and arms through the right holes and she helped him to sit back down on the bed and she climbed up herself, holding out the other item she'd brought with her.
"This is my very special friend... his name is Leo, and he scares away all the bad dreams and he's very good at his job, but he gets lonely at night when he doesn't have anybody to cuddle with... you think you could help keep him company for me?" She asked and Noah nodded, accepting the lion toy and Kath smiled softly, seeing Noah hug the toy to his chest. The toy and the shirt smelled like her, the bed was huge - everything around him was new to him. "Good! Now, I think you can go to sleep now, huh?" Kath helped him to get under the covers, tucking the duvet in around him.
"Don't leave," Noah begged as Kath went to turn the lamps off.
"I can stay for a little while." She said, sitting on the bed but it didn't take long for her to lie down beside him, lying on her side so she could face him as he laid the same way, looking at her and he held Leo close to him.
"I miss Daddy." He whispered. "Will the policeman be nice to him?" He whispered back, before letting out a yawn and Kath nodded her head.
"They'll be extra nice to him."
"Because you'll make sure they are." He said tiredly and Kath cracked a smile.
"Exactly." She assured him, watching over him as he fell asleep in bed and she very slowly turned off the lamps in the room, all besides one before she attempted to leave but she froze in the doorway. The little boy would wake up in the morning not knowing where she was or how to get anywhere in the house, he was already terrified enough being away from his Dad and with a total stranger. Kath quickly changed out of her clothes and into something more comfortable to sleep in before she went back to Noah, shutting the door silently and she climbed back into bed beside him, moving some of his dark hair out of his face. "Sleep tight, sweetie." She whispered, letting herself fall asleep in the bed next to him.
Noah woke up the next morning, rubbing his eyes and he whimpered when he didn't recognize the room as his own but he immediately saw Kath still sleeping beside him. He held onto Leo closer, letting the smell comfort him just as much as the hug itself from the toy did and he snuggled up with that, bringing his legs up so they tucked up underneath the big shirt too. He found himself watching Kath sleeping, how calm she looked and he matched her breathing as he got a little closer to her, slowly falling back to sleep again.
