The cries were heartbreaking, but it was the best sound that either of them had ever heard in their lives - it was a reassurance that she was okay, it was a certainty that their girl had made it. She'd truly proven everybody wrong that had ever doubted whether she'd survive.
"Get ready, Mommy!" The midwife said with a grin as her colleague laid a towel across Kath's chest and it was moments later that Dylan was laid on top of the towel, making DJ and Kath cry that much harder to see her for the first time. She cried as the midwives worked to clean her with another towel, but Kath cradled her daughter against her chest. It felt unreal that the screaming baby on her chest was hers, that she was half of her and DJ - they'd created such a beautiful little girl.
"My gorgeous girl." Kath breathed, tears running down her face. "I'm sorry that the first thing you heard on your way into the world was probably one of Daddy's really bad jokes." She said quietly, making the midwives laugh and DJ gasped dramatically.
"Hey, Daddy tells good jokes." DJ defended himself, but he leaned down and kissed Kath's head, leaving his lips there for longer than necessary. "I'm so proud of you." He whispered and Kath smiled softly, watching as he kissed their daughter. "And it's nice to finally meet you, princess." He said softly, his tears falling faster down his face as she laid contently on Kath's chest now that the midwives had stopped rubbing her with the towel.
"Would Daddy like to cut the cord?" The midwife asked and DJ's eyes widened. He didn't get asked to cut Noah's cord, so the question took him by surprise.
"Go." Kath encouraged and DJ nodded his head at the midwife, taking the scissors.
"This doesn't hurt her, does it? Dylan or Kath?" DJ asked in a low voice, relieved that Kath didn't hear him - she was cradling their daughter, shushing her as she made a small whining noise as she started to get cold.
"No, neither of them will feel anything, I promise." The midwife said with a smile, showing him where to cut and she clamped the cord as soon as DJ had cut through it and she smiled at DJ and Kath as they shared a kiss before giving one each to their new daughter. "I'm sorry, but we're gonna have to take her now - we're gonna clean her up and make sure she's okay because she's a little early." The midwife said and Kath cradled Dylan closer to her chest, tears falling faster.
"When will I get her back?" Kath asked and the midwife gave her a reassuring smile.
"It'll just be a few minutes unless we find something, we'll be right over here." The midwife said, pointing to the examination area where her colleague was already stood waiting. Kath and DJ's hearts broke again as they lifted Dylan from Kath's chest, making the tiny girl start to scream once more, DJ kissing Kath's head to comfort her and he held onto her hand.
"It's a good sign that she's crying, we just have to focus on that... we'll have her back in a minute, then we never have to give her up again." DJ whispered into her ear before kissing it and Kath turned into him the best she could, but she hissed with the pain it brought.
"She's so little." Kath practically whispered, making DJ smile and he nodded his head.
"Yeah, she is... our tiny warrior." DJ said with a grin that Kath couldn't help but mirror but it slowly faded as they were forced to listen to Dylan's cries as the midwives examined her and cleaned her up better.
Kath delivered the afterbirth as a doctor came to check over Dylan too, just to ensure that the baby was truly okay after the fall and being born six weeks premature and it was as Kath was settling into a recovery room that there was a knock on the door and it was as if she could feel the hole in her chest healing when the midwife stepped through holding Dylan in her arms.
"I think somebody missed Mommy and Daddy." The midwife cooed, laying her in Kath's waiting arms and she smiled as she instantly watched Kath and DJ dote on the whimpering infant.
"She's okay, right?" DJ asked and the midwife nodded her head.
"She's perfect... the doctor cleared her, she's just a little small. We'll see how she feeds soon, though, you're planning on breastfeeding, right?" The midwife asked and Kath nodded her head, not looking away from her daughter as she rocked her gently.
"It's the best thing for her," Kath said and the midwife smiled.
"I'll go and tell your family that she's here, then I can come back and we can try feeding her - but I'll leave you alone for a few minutes to dote on her." The midwife smiled, before leaving the room. DJ stared down at Dylan, tears burning his eyes - his heart was swelling with love for her and the only thing missing was Noah.
"My beautiful girl..." Kath cooed.

"Beautiful like her mother," DJ said, smiling when he saw Kath blush - even when she'd just given birth, he could still make her blush and that made them both grin.
