Damon and I walk inside to the 20s-decade dance inside the high school gym. I spot Elena and Stefan in the middle of the dance floor and grab onto Damon's wrist, leading him over to them.

"We four need to talk," Damon announces with a serious tone and my heart sinks down into my gut. Elena, Stefan, Damon, and I step outside the gym and into the school hallways.

"Alaric hasn't been taking his herbs, he's sick," I announce, letting out a deep sigh.

"If Alaric's sick, then we need to find a cure or something," Elena rambles on with worry laced in her eyes.

"We tried medicine. We tried magic," Damon points out, a frown resting on his face.

"Why don't we get him off vervain? Compel him?" Stefan suggests, shrugging his shoulders.

"To do what, pretend to be Alaric? That guy that we know is gone. We're talking about someone who not only hates vampires, but vampire sympathizers. Which makes one of his most obvious targets, both of you," Damon looks down at me and my sister.

"What? You'd think he'd go after Elena or Sam?" Stefan scoffs out with disbelief.

"So, wait, what are you suggesting we do?" I ask with confusion, lowering my eyebrows with confusion and concern.

"I'm suggesting that we put him out of his misery," Damon states clearly and my eyes widen.

"No way in hell," Jeremy's voice chimes in from behind us and I spin around, facing my brother.

"Oh, come on, it's what he would want. It's a mercy killing," Damon announces and I lower my head with shame.

"You are out of your mind," Jeremy states before storming off with clenched fists. Elena rushes after Jeremy and I gulp, standing there in despair.

A few moments later Bonnie sprints up to us with concern in her eyes and I snap my head towards her.

"It's Elena. She went into the woods with Esther," Bonnie announces and my jaw drops open.

Damon, Stefan, and I walk outside the dance and suddenly Damon and Stefan stop in their tracks. I glance down at the line of salt that Stefan and Damon are trapped behind and I shake my head with denial.

"It's Esther. She's trapped us in here," Stefan announces boldly and I step inside the line, glancing back into the dark woods.

"Elena's at the old cemetery. I know where it's at and I'm armed. I'll go by myself," I explain with confidence and Damon's eyes flicker onto me.

"Hey, wait! Be careful," Damon warns me with worry in his shaky voice. I press my hand to his soft cheek and shoot him a warm smile.

"You know I always am," I reassure him, before taking off into the woods. The branches and leaves crunch underneath my boots and I spot Elena standing next to Alaric.

I let out a sigh of relief and Alaric lowers his head with shame. "Elena...what is it?" I ask, stopping in my tracks.

"Esther she tried to turn Alaric into an Original like Elijah or Kol. He won't be completing the transition," Elena announces and the color drains from my face. My stomach twists into uneasy knots and Alaric walks inside the old cemetery building.

"So, that's it? He's just going to die?" I ask, shaking my head with denial. Elena places a hand on my shoulder, trying to comfort me and shoots me a weak smile.

"Say your goodbyes, Sam," Elena suggests and I nod my head. I walk inside the building and Alaric's eyes lock onto me.

"I'm assuming Elena told you everything," Alaric comments and the tears burn at the brim of my eyes. A painful lump forms in the back of my neck and I gulp, nodding my head.

"Thank you for helping me raise them, Alaric," I whisper with a soft voice.

"That was all you. I was just the drunk guy who found a sleeping spot on your couch," Alaric replies back with a kind tone and chills run down my spine. I walk up to him and place my hands on his shoulder, gazing into his eyes.

"That's not who you are.  You are the best father figure I could've asked for," I mumble out, pulling him into my tight embrace. His hands wrap around my lower back and he lets out a tiny chuckle.

I give him a tiny squeeze and the hot tears roll down my face, burning my cheeks. I choke out a quiet sob and slowly pull away from him. I glance into his eyes one last time and my knees become weak as I walk out of the building.

My eyes trail over every single person who ever cared about Alaric standing outside with a candle in their hand, expect for Damon, he's got Bourbon. I walk over to Damon and nudge his shoulder.

"He needs you Damon," I comment, and Damon lets out a shaky breath, walking over to the building. I place a hand over my chest and gaze up into the dark sky.
