36. Suspicions

Choi Young...

It was about late noon when we came out of the aquarium. We went to an Italian restaurant nearby and we all had delicious pasta. Then when we were about to leave,

"Young can you come with me to a place?" asked Heartina.

"Where?" I asked her because; this place was all new to her. It is not possible for her to know anyone here.

"I promised you that I would buy you fish cakes. Remember? Come on let us go", she said with a smile.

"OK Heartina, but what about Yoon Min Joon and Go Nam Soon?" I asked her though I wished she would be alone with me.

"Oh! We are busy Young. We will come with you, have fish cakes and carry on with our work", they smiled.

"What work?" I asked them.

"To welcome Heartina's groom with some present", said Go Nam Soon with a big grin. I got irritated and then asked her to lead the way.

Were they really telling the truth about the groom? Why should they bring up this topic of groom very suddenly after seeing Chae Kyung? Have they figured out my plan? No chance! How will they know that the lady who was here was not Chae Kyung? I was confused. I hated the idea. Yesterday, Heartina told me I was her best friend and she believed that Chae Kyung was my fiancée and I really loved her. What have I done? Now, she thinks I am having a fiancée and so she is trying to move away from me. Then if my guess is right, she will say ok to the groom soon. What have I done? My plan has backfired and I am the one in trouble now. At this point we had reached the fish cakes shop without any concentration from my side.

"Youngah! Finally, you have come to see me", she came and hugged me tightly.

I hugged her back and said, "How are you Ahjumma?"

"I am fine, thanks to you", she smiled with tears of joy in her eyes.

"Young, when did you come here alone?" asked Go Nam Soon and Yoon Min Joon.

"Before 5 years I think", I said.

"Any way let us have fish cakes now", said Heartina. I could see how much she loved that dish.

"Ahjumma, give us some fish cakes", I said. She gave us fish cakes and watched me closely. I got self-conscious and turned away from that ahjumma.

"How is the taste?" Heartina asked me.

"The fish cakes are heavenly Heartina. Do you know how to make these? Also another famous dish in Korea is the rolled omelets. Do you know to make those too?"

"I know both. One day I will make them for you", she smiled at me.

"Make it for us too", said Yoon Min Joon and Go Nam Soon together and then they left to buy a present for that groom. I hated that groom even before seeing him for I was in love with Heartina. Then after eating, I paid that Ahjumma and we were about to leave when I noticed that Ahjumma signaling something to Heartina and when I looked up, she acted as though she was all silent. Then Heartina asked for some water and the lady took her inside.

Did this ahjumma find out the truth? Did she find out that I wasn't the very one who met her here? Of course, I met her in the refugee camp and I was the one who allotted her a shop here. But I have never eaten here before now. So, it must have been him, who ate here. Seeing her expressions and actions, I feel that she is suspecting me. What if she tells some nonsense to Heartina? I must be the one to tell her the truth about me? What if the lady confuses her?

"Heartina! How long will you take?" I shouted and she came out after a minute. I looked at her to carefully analyze if she was suspicious about me, but she gave me a warm smile and took my hand and waved back to that ahjumma. I felt confused.
