mike & el

Mike watched nervously as El sat in front of them, venturing throughout her mind in search for Billy and whatever it was that the mind flayer didn't want her to see.

He hated this.

He hated how everyone else didn't seem to care that the more El pushed herself, the worse the effects could potentially be.

Mike wasn't trying to control her, he'd never do that. He was only trying to keep her safe.

It can't be good for her to use so much of her power and while he does trust her, he knows that she would push herself well past her limit just to keep everyone else safe.

He knows that she would put herself at risk because she's just that selfless, that's one reason he loves her.

Yes, Mike loves her, he had known for awhile now. He honestly hadn't planned on blurting it out like that earlier, but nobody seemed to understand his concern. It frustrated him and well, the words just slipped right out.

He loves El, more than anything and that only makes him even more worried, the overwhelming fear of losing her stuck in the forefront of his mind.

Mike's eyes never left her and he soon noticed the look on her face change from the emotionless state it had been in. Her lips parted, while her head began to shake, blood continuing to fall from her nose.

Something was happening in there, wherever she was and he was afraid it wouldn't end well.

Proving his thoughts to be true, El was suddenly ripping the cloth away from her face and screaming bloody murder.

Within an instant, he moved to get to her, while she did the same. Her hand brushed his cheek, before she fell into his arms, her grip tightening as if he were the only thing she needed in that moment.

"El, are you okay?" He asked, concern laced throughout his voice, while he held her closer. "What's wrong? What's wrong?? El?"

El only clutched on to him tighter, crying harder.

Everyone else in the room exchanged looks of uncertainty, none of them knowing what to do.

"Breathe! Just breathe!" Mike tried to help calm her down, repeating the words over and over, but it wasn't helping much.

She was panicking and he needed to talk her through it, to comfort her and assure her that she was okay, but he couldn't do that with everyone else just standing around watching.

He knew it was only a matter of time before they bombarded her with questions of what happened in there and given the state she was currently in, that would only upset her more.

He moved to stand up, bringing El up on her feet with him.

Max shot up from the couch at the same time, reaching out to grab El's arm. "Here, let me ta-"

"No Max! I got her!" Mike shouted, shooting the red head a look that kept her from saying another word.

Mike wrapped an arm around El's waist and led her into her room, shutting the door behind them.

He helped her to the bed, letting her sit down first, then took his place beside her. El immediately reached out, wrapping her arms around him and resting her head against his chest.

Her crying suddenly got louder.

Mike rubbed her arm, in attempt to soothe her. "Hey, it's okay. I got you."

He looked down at her with sad eyes, then glanced away for a moment, spotting the pile of bloody tissues on her floor, further proving his point that this was too much for her.

God, why isn't anyone listening to me?

He wanted to get angry, to walk right back out there and yell at them again, because none of them seemed to care, but instead he focused back on the girl in his arms.

"El, are you alright?" He softly asked, but only got a muffled whimper from her.

He eased out of her embrace, bringing his hands up to her cheeks. "Look at me, just look at me okay?"

El did as he asked, her teary eyes locking with his. Mike's thumbs grazed her cheeks, wiping away some of her tears.

"Breathe, in and out." He coaxed, his words eventually starting to calm her down.

El remained silent, while squeezing her eyes shut. Her breathing was slowing down and Mike could see her unease start to fade away.

"He said he's going to kill everyone... He's going to kill me." She finally spoke after a moment, her panic from before beginning to seep back in. "Mike, he's going to kill you!"

Mike couldn't help but feel terrified now.

He's going to kill everyone??

Oh God.

He couldn't let his fear show though, not when El needed him to be strong. She was surely terrified and it was his responsibility to make her feel safe.

"It's okay, you're okay El." He told her, quickly nodding his head while he spoke. "I'm not going to let anything happen to you."

"What about you?" Her shaky voice asked, looking at him with eyes so full of doubt.

"Nothing's going to happen to me either." He assured her, before lifting the bottom of his shirt up to gently clean the blood from her face.

El watched him closely while he wiped at her skin. He was so focused on cleaning her up, that it took him a minute to see just how she was staring up at him.

Once he noticed, his breathing hitched. She was looking at him in a way she hadn't before, a way that was so intense he didn't know how he managed to bring himself to speak.

"Everything's all going to be okay, I promise."

She hesitantly nodded her head, then moved forward, pressing a quick, unexpected kiss to his lips.

Her lips only touched his for a short moment, but it was long enough to make up for what he had been missing the past few days. Going from kissing as much as they did, to barely getting a glance from her was difficult for him.

He could only hope that after all of this was over, things could be good between them again...

El gave Mike a faint smile, to which he returned and then pulled her back in his arms.

Mike held her close, giving her the comfort she needed, until they had to go back out there and fill the others in, so they could face the rest of the chaos coming their way.
