mike & el
part 1Mid-July of '89, brought severe heat, long days, and a whole lot of memories. It also served as a reminder that the summer was almost over and the Party would all soon go their separate ways. Well, sorta. Lucas and Max were headed in the same direction, as well as Will and Dustin.
Mike and El were also attending the same university, but that was to be expected. Nobody saw those two ever leaving each other's side.
No matter how far apart each duo ended up, they all had the same hopes in mind: for them all to move on to bigger and better things. They had dealt with their fair share of "bigger things," so maybe that part they could go without. They could use some "better things" though.
Since their days were running out, the Party had been aiming to spend as much of their free time together as possible, doing whatever they could get themselves into.
This particular Wednesday, Mike and El had been with their friends most of the day, dealing with all the chaos that tended to follow the six of them around. That day they had gone to the lake, only having dealt with a few minor incidents. Will got stung in the eye by a wasp and Max had sat down on a mound of fire ants.
Compared to the much bigger creatures they had taken on just a few short years ago, they could take some temporary stinging, even though it was downright painful.
Inter-dimensional monsters really did set the bar high for them when it came to situations they found to be dire.
They had decided to finally call it a day, once Lucas and Dustin got into a thirty minute argument over the moon landing. The others weren't necessarily in the mood to listen to all their silly bickering over something that didn't even matter. They were used to it, but that didn't mean they would put up with it.
After saying their friendly goodbyes, each returned safely to the comfort of their own homes, with the exception of El. She had returned to what had become her second home, Mike's.
Mike's family had gone off to visit his grandparents, so he had the house to himself for the whole week. Lucky for him, right?
Now, it was just the two of them, Mike and El.
All alone, just how they like it.
"It's such a beautiful night tonight." El sighed contently, while scooting further back into Mike's embrace. The two were sitting on a blanket in the backyard, El sitting between Mike's legs, while his arms were wrapped loosely around her. "I really don't think I've ever seen the stars shine this bright. It's incredible."
El always found things to be so fascinating, never withholding her astonishment when she spoke about something new. She always saw the beauty in things, anyone else would simply fail to notice.
One reason he loved her so much.
One out of an infinite amount of reasons.
Mike had taken a bottle of vodka from his parents stash, the two of them having just cracked it open. They were planning on sharing it, but still only drinking a small amount. They didn't want to get completely drunk, really just a light buzz. Ever since the Party had all experienced their first time being drunk, they snuck some alcohol from their parents from time to time.
The couple sat comfortably, talking about anything and everything. They always managed to venture off into long, meaningful conservations.
