mike & elMike had been visiting El for the weekend and had been on cloud nine the entire time. It had been a month since he'd last gotten to visit her, which was far too long for him.
He hated being away from her more than anything, so the past few days had restored the true happiness that only she could bring into his life.
Today was his last day with her though and he was already starting to feel that happiness fading away.
Leaving her is just so hard to do, probably the hardest thing he ever had to do— he would know, seeing as he's been forced to do it many times now.
He just wants to be with her all the time, every minute of every day. It's the only place he ever wants to be, but that's unfortunately not an option since she's been living in a whole other state for nearly half a year now.
He refused to let their inevitable goodbye ruin the rest of their time together though, not when time had now become something they were rarely given.
So, today they were taking advantage of every single minute that they could.
The two were currently making their way through the empty field behind El's new house. The grass had grown up pretty high, meaning that God knows what could be out there, but El likes to look at the flowers that grow on the far side of field, so that's exactly what they were doing.
Mike was trailing a bit behind her, partly because she took off as soon as they'd reached the field, too overcome with excitement.
He thought it was adorable, how excited she was over flowers. Given all that she's been through though, Mike was more than happy that she even had the chance to appreciate something as simple as a flower growing in a field. He hoped that she got to experience this feeling as often as possible.
"Oh, come on you slow poke!" El suddenly hollered out, finally noticing how far back he was. She began to slow down a bit, eventually coming back toward him, the slight breeze causing her hair to blow in her face and the blue sundress she was wearing to whip in the wind.
Mike sped up a little, the closer he got though, it seemed as if everything around him was moving in slow motion.
Watching her come his way with a radiant smile on her face took his breath away, which is really the main reason he ended up so far behind her. He got simply got distracted by her beauty and next thing he knew, she was what felt like miles ahead of him.
He couldn't help but get distracted by her.
Sure, El may be one person out of the billions on this Earth, but to Mike, that beautiful girl, running through the field without a care in the world is the blazing sun that illuminates his whole entire world.
Without her, he's like a helpless little flower, a lilac in desperate need of what such a powerful source of light had to offer in order to keep him alive.
Anytime she's near, that dazzling glow she radiates brings him to life in ways he never knew were possible. He never knew what living was truly like until he met her.
When she's gone though, it's like the sky over top of his world turns crimson, leaving him in this darkness that even he can't find his way out of, not without her.
But she's not gone... She's here, right in front of him. Meanwhile, he's lost in that head of his, thinking about her.
"Mike! Earth to Mike!" El yelled, shaking his arms in attempt to snap him out of the daze he was clearly in.
"Yeah?" He finally muttered, the feeling of her arms now wrapping loosely around his waist catching his attention.
"Where'd you go?" El giggled, peering up at him with the faintest bit of amusement on her face.
"Sorry, I-"
"Were you staring at me again?" She interrupted, an unbelievably cute smirk on her face.
"I can't help it." Mike shamelessly shrugged, taking another moment to admire her beauty. "You're just... God, you're so beautiful."
He watched the grin on her face grow further, her golden eyes shining with love for him, the sight making him feel as if he could melt down into a puddle right then and there.
Before he could gush any more about her, El jumped up in his arms, firmly planting a kiss on his lips. Mike did his best to keep his balance as he held her up, but they ended up falling straight down to ground.
"Are you okay?" El asked him through her laughter, unable to contain the childish grin on her face.
"Yeah, I'm good." Mike assured her, chuckling along with her, the noise being cut off when she kissed him yet again. El being on top of him made it fairly easy for her to deepen the kiss, her tongue effortlessly slipping through to meet his.
They got lost in one another, mouths moving wildly, as they momentarily forgot everything that went beyond where they laid out in that open field.
It was perfect, not having to worry about someone walking in on them and ruining the moment. Not a soul was around, giving them plenty of time to focus on each other.
Eventually, El had been the first to pull away, now hovering over him, as she took his face in her tiny hands. "I love you, you know that?"
Mike acted as if the words were lost on him, like he'd never heard her say such a thing. "I don't know, you might need to tell me again."
El giggled softly, leaning down to kiss his cheek.
"I love you, Mike Wheeler, more than anything in the entire galaxy."
Mike brushed the fallen strands of hair back from her face, letting his thumb graze her cheek.
"And I love you, El Hopper, more than anything in the entire galaxy."
"You better." She teased, shooting him a playful grin, before getting off of him and up on her feet. "Okay, come on! We're almost there!"
Mike pushed himself up off the ground, grabbing the hand she had held out for him to take.
They walked the rest of the way, their entwined hands swinging between them. They only pulled apart once they had reached the purple flowers, El insisting that she had to pick some.
"Mike, do you know what these are called?" She asked, now holding a decent sized bouquet of the little flowers in her hand.
"I don't know, I'm not too good with plants and all that." He told her, wishing that he was so he could actually give her an answer.
"Well whatever they are, they're so pretty! Don't you think?"
"Yeah, they're nice." He shrugged, before reaching out a hand to grab hers. "I think the girl holding them is much prettier though."
El inevitably broke out into a fit of giggles, instantly blushing, just as Mike hoped she would. He thought it was insanely cute when her cheeks would flush and that shy smile of hers would bring out her dimples.
"You're blushing, baby." He teased, El instantly scrunching her nose up and shaking her head.
"I'm not! It's just, it's from the sun okay?" She insisted, her flustered denial making Mike shake his head in amusement.
"Oh sure, that's what I'd say to."
Of course when he'd say that, it would have some truth to it, since the girl always responsible for the flush to his cheeks was his sun.
Little did Mike know, El's words were every bit as true as his own, because he was the sun in her world too.
