Olivia sighs and drops her sandwich onto her tray. She turns to face me, “There are a heck load of rumours going on around and people don’t like it. Not only that, but Sapphire and Candace threatened that if anybody started hanging with you, they’d make their life hell too. The only reason I’m talking to you now is because this whole thing is ridiculous. I’m not going to be told what to do by some egomaniac and control freak we used to call our best friend.” Olivia blurts in exasperation, hardly taking a breath in between her sentences. My eyes go wide, my plans of staying expressionless and emotionless totally slipping into thin air as I ask in disbelief, “What have I missed?”
Viola raises her hand in the air like I’m her teacher as she explains, “Olivia can you please tell Emmerson that Sapphire and Candace are literally inseparable, they would use the term as ‘BFF’s, the abbreviation or acronym of Best Friends Forever. When Emmerson left for three weeks and three days -I counted- Rivendale has literally been run by them, they are bulling everyone. Sapphire is such a different person now.” Viola admits, sending Olivia a knowing look.
“You do realise you can actually talk to me, Viola. I’m right here.” I wave at her but she ignores my gesture and turns to Olivia again, “Tell Emmerson that if I talk to her, Sapphire will get cross and possibly burn my textbooks like she did to that boy, Jimmy Clarkson yesterday. And thus, I would not be able to buy any new ones because they would surely break my budget and are titled as References in the library, which means I will not be able to take them home to revise. That would be absolutely chagrining.” She concludes. I notice an amusing fact about Viola; she never uses connotations and is quite an old-schooled person.
“That’s a shame… Hey guys, did I ever repay you back for helping me find Hunter?” I question, uncertain that I did, but mostly ask the question to divert my attention from the negative conversation. Vincent stays quiet and pushes his glasses back up on his nose, the gesture obviously holding some sort signal. Realisation sparks as I remember Vincent asked for a pack or two of contact lenses. “Oh god, I’m so sorry guys! What did you want again?” I quickly ask, regret clearly evident on my face. Olivia smiles at me; a real general smile compared to the ugly looks I’ve been getting today. “Don’t worry about it.” She says truthfully, “Our expectations were too high anyway; we were basically taking advantage of your wealth and that wasn’t right. So it’s all okay.”
She’s such an honest person. I look around the table and notice all of them holding sullen expressions on their faces, it saddens me and makes me feel guilty so I tell them, “Why don’t you guys come to my house after school? I feel like I owe it to you. Please.” I beg, thinking of a plan that would endorse their liking of me. Looking at the potential of Olivia’s beauty, I get an idea. Makeover time.
“I don’t think that would be a good idea…” Viola exclaims, not specifically addressing me with that statement. “Come on, you guys will love the surprise, I promise!” I beg.
All of them reluctantly nod, “Fine. But Olivia, tell Emmerson that I cannot stay long at her house because I must study for four hours minimum. Exams are in Four months.”
I chuckle and agree.
When my stomach growls, I realise I should probably buy myself some lunch since I forgot to tell Maria I’d be going to school today so she never made me anything. On my way towards the cafeteria, I turn my gaze towards the table I used to sit at and gasp when I see Hunter sitting on a chair with Sapphire on his lap.
