Chapter 10

“I don’t get it. She labels the trays but the contents look the same. I mean, is this really even chicken?” Lisa complained, staring at the brown pile on her tray.

I barely glanced at her. My attention was elsewhere. Ever since Dave told me he was moving, i could not think of anything else. I had gone home that day with heaviness. Kayla left me for studies and because of a job offer her father got. Now, Dave was leaving me too. What was it with me? Do i drive people away?

“Hello, are you there? Julia? Julie? Jay Jay?” Shana called out to me, waving her hands in front of me.

“What? Huh?” i asked, shaking off my thoughts.

Dee looked at me, concerned. “What’s wrong with you? You’re not yourself at all.”

“Yeah, trouble, babe?” Lisa asked, throwing her fork onto her tray.

I waved my hand dismissively. “No, it’s nothing.”

“Pfft. Please. We know there’s something bothering you. Spill it,” Lisa demanded, staring hard at me. She pounded her fist on the table.

My eyes grew wide at her dramatics. “There’s nothing to spill.”

“That’s what the milk always says,” Lisa mumbled, brushing her hair from her face delicately. Three pairs of eyes stared at her for a moment, trying to make sense of what she just said.

“Don’t cry over spilled milk. Nothing to spill,” she explained, gesturing. We remained staring with confused faces. “Oh, forget it. You guys will never understand.”

“I don’t think anyone would,” Dee mumbled, smiling slightly. Lisa stuck her tongue out.

Shana gestured for them to shut up, turning to me. “Is it about Jeff and Cass dating?”

Lisa gasped, eyes trained on Shana. “She’s not supposed to know that!”

I laughed at her. “Lisa, it’s okay. I saw them together when i was tutoring Cass.”

“Oh, honey. That boy is totally not right for you. You were meant to be with someone better,” Lisa reassured me, making me smile.

“I’m okay, really,” i told Lisa. I turned to Shana. “No, it’s not about them.”

“Dave?” Shana asked, sapphire eyes concerned.

I shook my head, biting into my sandwich. From the corner of my eye, i saw Dave walk into the cafeteria. He was with his mates from basketball and some cheerleaders. He had a small smile on his lips as he listened to something Kate was saying. She flicked her chestnut brown hair, clearly flirting with him. It was obvious he did not notice. A small smile spread across my lips without me knowing.

“No, huh?” Shana asked lowly, a grin on her lips. She had seen me staring.

I blushed and looked around the table, relieved no one heard what she said. “It’s nothing.”

“People say that when they are just too embarrassed to tell the truth or it’s something really stupid,” Shana whispered, eating her fries.

I rolled my eyes and turned my gaze back at Dave. He was following his group to a table. We were best friends but he had his circle of friends and i had mine. We knew that we did not have to by each other’s side 24/7. I usually did not mind when he had lunch with them but today, i felt upset that he did not eat with me. I blamed on the fact that i wanted to spend as much time as i can while we were still in the same country.
