Chapter Twenty-Two - Let Me Save You
(Excuse any errors)
Short Chapter
-Blaine-
Yesterday was rough. After we left the cemetery, Jordan drove back to the hotel and I cried myself to sleep. Jordan never left my side because occasionally, I would feel his hands gently caress my cheek and arm. Instead of my usual nightmares, I had a dream about the day mom took Harriette and me to the Haven Park, we sat in the field of lavender and at strawberry shortcakes that she had made from scratch. That day is amongst my happiest memories and I didn't want to wake up from the dream.
In the morning, we packed up our things and drove to the storage facility. I gave the man at the front my name and for a full minute, he stared at me as if I was a ghost. He asked for proof that I am who I say I am and I let him know that all the proof he needs is in the storage unit. Reluctantly, he opened the storage unit. Like it said in the letter, there were two suitcases, one grey and one a light pink. I had to restrain myself from crying at the thought that my mom really thought Harriette wouldn't be killed too.
The man grabbed the yellow envelop and pulled out my birth certificate and began to quiz me. After answering all of his questions, he handed the envelop over and walked out. I emptied its content into the ground, my social security card, birth certificate, insurance card, passport, immunization records, and all of Harriette's documents fell out too. In a small white envelope, five thousand dollars were folded neatly.
I put Harriette's documents back in the envelope and collected mine. Jordan held my papers as I brought the envelope to the man and told him to shred them. He shredded them in front of me and I thanked him. I decided to not look through the suitcases and we left the facility. We stopped at the market and I bought flowers before we went back to the cemetery and I offered the groundskeeper the five thousand in return for him to remove my father's stone and coffin away from my mom's and sister's. They had no right to put him next to them.
He reluctantly agreed and we watched as he destroyed the stone and used a big yellow machine to dig up coffin. The sight of it made me feel uneasy so I turned away. It took him about thirty minutes to relocated it to somewhere far away from this section. When he came back, he fixed the dirt around my mom's and sister's stone. As promised, I handed him the envelope. I placed the flowers on each of the stones and said a final goodbye.
I felt better after leaving the cemetery, in some way I feel comforted by the fact that he's no longer near them. It might have been stupid since it's been like that for twelve years but I don't regret it.
My mom knew that her life was in danger and instead of skipping town to protect herself, she made sure to arrange for her kids to escape the grasp of an evil man. Although it didn't go as planned, it shows me that the last thing she ever did on this earth is love her children.
I don't know if next year is going to be as hard as this year was but I have a feeling that I'll be okay. I know now that she is always watching over me and guiding me. I have proven to myself that I am stronger than what I give myself credit for. Going back after all of these years was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do but I made it.
I made it with the help of Jordan, if he was not by my side, I probably would have gone insane. He was my anchor. As we drove in silence, I could help but think about how much he means to me. Also, now, I recognize that he doesn't look at me like he's staring at the reflection of Aaron, he looks at me like he's looking at-
"Blaine," His voice softly breaks through my train of thought. I lift my head up from the window and look towards him. He smiles softly, "We're here."
