Six minutes. Your brain can survive up to six minutes after you die before the lack of oxygen begins to kill your brain. From around four to six minutes your blood no longer flowing causes your blood cells to start to die. After ten those cells are dead. If you are somehow resuscitated after that time period, the likelihood of you being anything but a brain dead vegetable is slim to none. Your organs begin to fail and you will probably die anyway due to someone pulling the plug.

I don't know how long I was dead before they found me.

My father got the worst of the hit. The driver had hit us from the drivers side at first, but the force flipped our car over, rolling down the small hill beside us and into a tree. My dad of course, always trying to be the hero, had thrust himself in front of my very pregnant mom. I guess he had been hoping to absorb as much of the accident as possible.

I remember my mom reaching back to hold my hand before it all went black. The paramedics said they don't know how it happened, no sign of a body going through the windshield or anything like that but they found me about 8 feet away from the wreckage. We had all been declared dead at the scene. Supposedly it had been a long time, at least a half an hour, before another car drove past everything; and another 15 minutes at that for the ambulance to arrive.

But somehow, by the great God or whatever you may believe in, as they were hauling the bodies up into the back, a deep breath was taken in and a slow heartbeat started thumping again. Tha thump, tha thump, tha thump. The ringing in my ears slowly started to fade and loud voices began booming around me. I slowly started to open my eyes, blinking a bit to get adjusted to the gloomy sky and flashing lights.

A young EMT was the first to notice me. I remember hearing her yell out something, causing some of the others to glance over and come rushing my way. Immediately one of their hands reached out to touch me, probably to check my vitals and see what the heck was happening. Her hand touched my wrist and that's when it started.

I began screaming.
