Days passed and nothing changed. I was so empty. Reading wasn't entertaining at work and I broke two cups at the diner before I was told to take a break and go home. Not that home has been much better. Gran wasn't acting like her usual sassy self and I was stuck in a constant state of quiet. I missed my best friend.
It wasn't until Gran almost fell on her way to the kitchen that I noticed something very off.
"Gran! Are you okay? What happened?" I rushed out, quickly coming to her side as she slumped against the wall. Instead of fighting me like she normally would for fussing over her as she would call it, she let my eyes wander all over her as she took little breaths.
"Just got a lil' dizzy is all. No need to fuss darlin'. Your Gran is as strong as a two headed horse," she said breathlessly. I didn't believe that for one second.
Bringing over a kitchen chair I rushed over to the cabinet with her medication. Quickly taking them out I noticed something was not right.
"Gran, have you not been taking your pills? I lay them out for you every morning when I give you your coffee." Confusion was written all over my face, along with worry. It was a morning routine. I always came down as she argued with the coffee machine, took over, and made her coffee and toast to go with her pills. I never skipped a day. I had those little weekly pill containers with it all preplanned and everything.
She didn't bother to meet my gaze as she responded with, "Well hon, they aren't doin' me much good anyway. I'm older than a tortoise at this point."
"Gran, no. The doctor said you're supposed to take them." I didn't even know what to do. I can't force this woman to take them. She would never let me have that kind of control over her and quite frankly, she scared the heck out of me anyway.
"Oh, I'll be damned if I listen to what that doctor says. He doesn't know what he's talking about anyhow. Just tryin' to make money like the scammers they are I tell you."
"This is not the time for you to be stubborn Gran!"
"Baby, how much longer do you think I have left? Those pills aren't doing anything for me anymore. I'm sick, I'm old, and there's no slowing down the inevitable. Now you know I love you but there is a time for everyone and my time is nearing." She said sadly. Gran knew how much I depended on her. The only family I had left besides her was Paul.
With tears in my eyes she started speaking again, "You are much stronger than you think. So you better bet your ass that I'm gonna be watching over you no matter what. There is so much coming your way and you don't even realize it yet."
The tears spilled as I slumped to the floor, face in hands as I cried at what I knew was coming eventually.
Hi! Another short one. I was just curious if y'all had an opinion on Paul and hers friendship. Would you be interested in seeing a imprint come into play between the two? I have a good play on that if it interests you. It would not end in our Paul getting all heartbroken and puppy dog vibes like Jacob did! Just thought I'd ask the readers opinion <3
