Gran was sitting in her recliner when she felt it. The air moving swiftly past her, and she smiled. With eyes still closed she decided to greet her little guest.
"You can come out. I know you're there."
If vampires could cry Alice would have been drowning in tears. Coming out of the shadows and approaching the recliner, she kneeled down beside the old woman. Gran had finally opened her eyes as she reached forward and grasped the freezing hand of the vampire beside her.
"Now don't you do that. I've waited way too many years to see you again for you to make it all depressing."
A jingly laugh filled the air. "I knew I should have visited. I just didn't think you would still remember me."
"Of course I would!" Gran's old voice croaked. "Ally you know what's coming."
Nodding, the tiny vampire looked down.
"She's so much like you. In every way. And she has yet to realize her full potential. Caylee needs you."
"Oh, Thia, I think she's so much more like you. So strong and stubborn."
"My time here is done, we both know this. Hers is just beginning. Take care of her for me. Promise me."
The words were barely audible, as her heartbeat slowed to a brief thump, until eventually stopping altogether. Rushing to her feet, Alice knocked over a water glass beside them and began her way to the back door.
"I promise sister."
