Nene's POVMy phone alarm woke me up and I noticed that Erima and I were snuggled. Just as I reached out to put off the alarm, Erima said:
"Oooh, Nene, please put it off... I need to sleep."
"I will... it's 5 am and you want to sleep some more...? Get up and get ready for school." I said, shaking her shoulder.
"It's Friday, please let me sleep," Erima said as she rolled over and covered her head with a pillow.
"And so? Don't you go to school on Fridays?" I asked, as i stood up and folded my arms across my chest.
Erima slightly raised her head and said:
"Oya, observe your morning devotion while I sleep a little, wake me when you are done."
●(P.S: 'Oya..', pronounced as spelled, is a Nigerian slang which means 'get ready...' or 'it is time to do something...'.
It is a word from the 'Yoruba' language spoken by the people in the South-West region of Nigeria. The word has however found its way into the vocabulary of most people living, particularly, in the Southern part of Nigeria.).
"Very funny. My devotion?! So you expect me to pray alone while you sleep? Abeg, get up joor! Let's do the morning devotion before Mum comes here." I said firmly.
● (P.S: "...Abeg, get up joor!..." Nigerian pidgin/ broken English which means: "...please, get up!...).
Erima got off the bed as she exclaimed:
"ooooh!!!"
"What is 'ooooh'?" I asked as I mimicked her.
"You better kneel beside me fast and let's start the prayers and be done with it." I said as I moved my right hand towards her.
While we observed our devotion, I couldn't help but smile at the way my younger sister, Erima was dozing off in between our prayers. I even had to sometimes, pinch her to wake up but I later stopped and allowed her to sleep.
After the devotion, I woke Erima up and she asked:
"Are we done already?"
"No, we are just about to start." I replied in a snarky way as I went into the bathroom.
"Amen, Amen, Halleluyah! Now I can sleep." She said as she got on the bed to sleep again.
I was done with my bathe and I dressed up for school. While I was packing my books into my backpack, Mum came into the room.
"Nene, you have to hurry up. Your dad said he will have a quick and light breakfast today. He has a 7 am meeting at the office so he'll leave early." She said, then she saw Erima on the bed.
"What's wrong with your sister?" She asked.
"Why is she still sleeping at this time?" she said, looking at my table clock.
"I don't know..." I replied with a shrug.
I lifted my backpack just as my mum moved towards Erima. She shook her slightly and asked sweetly:
"Erima honey, what's wrong? Why are you still sleeping?"
Really?! Honey?! Why is she always so sweet to Erima whenever Erima misbehaves? I rolled my eyes and moved towards the door when Erima replied:
