It was the next morning and I slept in until twelve o’clock. For ten minutes I just sat on my bed. I felt empty and useless. Images of my fight with Silas flashed into my mind and I rubbed my fingers against my eyes. I took in a deep breath and got out of bed to get ready for my day.
. . .
“You have to make up with him.” Elena had called me only minutes after I went down the stairs. I was making a coffee and she had called. “Hello to you too.” I could practically feel her rolling her eyes on the other line. “Like I said, you have to; you must get back together with him.” She was really acting weird. “Why?” “Not only do you guys still both love each other so much, The End of the Year dance is coming up soon and you cannot go without a date.” I laughed. “It’s not that simple Elena, he’s a killer.” I emphasized my words on killer. “That doesn’t matter! Well, if he was human yeah it would matter but he has to do it to live Bec. If he didn’t do what he does, he would die. Do you want him to die?” “Wow if you put it that way...” “Sorry for being so direct but you two really are perfect for each other.” Elena was defiantly acting weird, something was up. “Elena, spill.” She hesitated but said “I saw Silas today walking with who I presumed was him friend or brother I don’t know but whoever the guy was, he was hot.” This time, I really laughed. “But I swear I meant everything I said.” She said with a promising tone. I knew that she had a point even though I hated to admit it. I did still love Silas and I don’t know if I’d ever stop. “How about this, you call him to meet up for lunch in a few minutes and you can tell him to bring his friend. Just text me where and when we are going.” I heard her celebrating on the other end of the phone. “Yes okay, love you Bec, see you soon!” She hung up and I texted her Silas’s phone number. I changed out of my pajamas and put on a fitting black crop top and a red floral skirt. Not bothering to curl my hair, I left it straight. I did my make up by putting on some mascara, foundation and black winged eye liner. Adding on a coat of lip-gloss, I checked my phone and saw Elena’s text. –meet at DDs ASAP (10 minutes or so) JI grabbed my light pink purse that had a gold coloured chain and put it on my shoulder. Placing my keys, wallet and phone in the purse, I pulled out my black, three inch pumps. I placed them on my feet and headed into the garage. I slid into my car and drove out of the garage and headed towards Turtle Jacks.
. . .
I stepped out of my car and locked my doors. The weather outside was warm but not too hot to be uncomfortable. As I walked towards my family restaurant, I saw Elena’s mom pull up to the front doors of the restaurant. She waved to her mom and then caught sight of me walking towards her. “You look hot!” She yelled and smiled. “Silas will be drooling over you.” I smiled at her comment. I felt a boost of confidence run through my body. “You look stunning yourself.” I told Elena, and she did. She wore a blue floral lace, cross strap dress that looked gorgeous on her and it made all her features stand out. We turned towards the entrance of the door and walked through. Looking around the room, we saw that Silas was already sitting at one of the booths. I looked at Elena who was just as surprised as I was, his friend wasn’t there, and Silas was alone. Elena looked devastated but quickly changed her expression to calm and happy. My breath caught when I made eye contact with Silas. His eyes looked darker than usual and gloomy. His mouth formed a half smile when he saw us walk towards him. Despite the fight I had with him yesterday night, I felt the familiar pang of adoration towards him in my chest. I ached for his touch and for his lips to be on mine, but I resisted the urge to throw myself at him. We walked closer to Silas and stood right in front of him. “I thought Elena told you to bring your friend?” To my surprise he frowned. “I did.” Elena and I looked around the room and I said “Where is he? Is he late?” Silas’s expression changed and he raised a brow. “You can’t see him?” I was confused by his question. “Of course I can’t see him, he’s not even here!” That was when Silas did the unexpected. He laughed. He laughed extremely hard that he was wheezing for air. He punched the air at the empty seat beside him. He was going crazy, I was almost sure of it. Then out of thin air, a boy appeared and was laughing as well. “So you were wrong, you just screwed up and thought you weren’t in physical form.” The boy said. Then they both laughed harder. Nobody noticed the boy appear out of thin air, but they did notice their loud, hysterical laughter. “What the hell is going on?” Elena yelled, demanding an answer. Silas and his friend stopped laughing. His friend nudged Silas and Silas spoke. “As you’ve probably guessed, my friend here; Troy, is a Faded Shadow.” My face and Elena’s must’ve looked blank so he said “Did I not tell you we have two forms?” Elena shook her head and almost yelled, “No! You didn’t, I think you left that part out!” Troy bursted out laughing again but when Elena gave him a stare down, then he shut his mouth. “Well then I told you now, we have the ability to enter our physical forms where you can see us, hear us, touch us and hear us. But we also can change into our natural, true forms where you can’t see, hear or feel us. But the one down side is that every movement we make in our natural forms, every creature can feel it. Basically depending on how fast we are moving, it feels like the wind is blowing in the air.” Silas explained. “So if you ever feel the wind inside a building, it could be a Faded Shadow.” Troy added. The fact that Faded Shadows were able to practically become invisible sent a chill down my spine. Before Elena or I could say anything Troy asked “So you couldn’t see me?” I shook my head. He looked at Silas and then Silas said “You know how last night I said that you had a gift?” I nodded slowly. “Well you don’t.” Wow that was harsh. He was acting like such an asshole. Everything they said started to make sense to me and then everything clicked. “The day when I was walking home from school, I ran over something, was that you?” He nodded “Yeah, you left tire marks all over me.” Ignoring his comment I continued. “When I looked under the tire, I saw a hand at first but then when I looked back, it was gone. Did you uh... become invisible?” “Sure” He replied. The events of that day flooded back into my mind and I thought about all that happened. “So what is that ‘gift’ thing you were talking about?” Troy answered that question. “There is something call a Seeing One, basically the person is human but they have the gift of being able to see us while we are in our natural forms. Silas thought you were one, but it turns out you aren’t.” What the actual hell. “Can we please not talk about this?” Elena pleaded. I nodded in agreement with her. We had been standing there for the entire conversation so she slid into the booth and I sat down beside her. She was facing Troy and I was in front of Silas. I opened up the menu and looked for something to get. “Sorry for acting like an asshole.” I looked up in surprise to see Silas staring at me thoughtfully. I waved it off. “No seriously, I don’t know why I acted like that, I’m sorry.” He said again. I felt slightly better after he apologized for the second time. “Its okay” He nodded and took out a menu. “Recommend anything?” He asked. Taking a few seconds to think I said “The fish and chips here are really good. Get them with a side of the DDs sauce, it’s really good.” He smiled and said “Sure I’ll get it.” I looked at our drinks menu and smiled but then it quickly turned into a frown. Elena noticed my change in mood and said “Hey Bec, you should really get a drink. I can drive if you want.” My eyes lit up and I said “That’d be great, thanks.” She smiled and continued to talk to Troy. “I could drive her home.” Elena and I both looked at Silas in shock. Troy just grinned. “Uh, Elena is driving me.” I told him. “Yeah but I was thinking of taking you to the falls.” I looked at Elena who just sat there and smiled. “Becca that’d be great for you two.” She smiled even more. I rolled my eyes at her but said “Sure, that’s fine.” There was no excitement in my words but on the inside, I was burning with desire to be alone with Silas, even after last night. From my agreement, Silas grinned. “You won’t regret it.” I giggled. “I hope not.” After everyone decided on what we were getting, we called over a waiter. It was Joe. “Hey Becca!” He leaned down and gave me a hug. Silas looked at Joe with jealousy, I almost laughed. Amused by his jealousy, I gave Joe a peck on the cheek. Silas’s eyes went wide and they burned with jealousy. Joe just smiled, oblivious to Silas’s stare. I smiled and said “Can I get my usual please?” He nodded and took everyone else’s order. Silas got the fish and chips, Troy got a steak and Elena ordered a chicken Caesar salad. My usual order was stripped beef, covered with gravy and creamy corn and broccoli on the side. “Would anyone like any drinks?” Troy ordered can of coke, Elena got a Sprite and Silas ordered a root beer. “Can I get a Diamond Margarita please?” Joe laughed and said “Coming right up.” He walked away to make our orders. “I think I’m going to bring a bottle of bourbon home later.” I told Elena. “Are you sure it’s for home, or for you?” I laughed and said “Probably for both.” “So you’re a drinker than?” Troy asked. “Well I appreciate alcohol but I don’t always get drunk or anything.” I told him. “Guys, we need to talk about the dance.” Elena said out of the blue, all she talked about was the Junior End of the Year dance. “Silas are you taking anyone to the dance?” Elena’s question made me want to burry myself in a hole. It was such a directing question; I kicked Elena’s feet under the table. She kicked me back and continued smiling at Silas. “Um no...” Elena smiled at his response then looked at me. I shook my head at her, signaling that I wasn’t going to say anything. She huffed in annoyance. She spoke on and on about her dress and we all listened to her. As I engaged in conversation with Elena, I felt Silas’s stare on me. When I turned to look at him, his stare didn’t waver. “Becca, I know you hate me right now but I still love you.” I wanted to tell him how much I really loved him but I couldn’t let myself tell him that. Saving me from further discussion, Joe came to our table with our food and drinks. Placing them in front of us he said “Bon à petite.” We all thanked him and started to eat or meals.
