I woke up sore and my head hurt like hell. “Damnit, stupid bed.” I sat up and put my head in my hands. After a few moments, the pain eased. The headache was uncalled for but I assumed I must’ve hit my head on the back boards of my bed while I was asleep. As I slowly stood up, all the events from yesterday rushed into my head and suddenly, I felt dizzy again. From Silas’s beauty and kindness to my mother’s diagnosis, it was all too much for me to handle. No matter the pain or joy I’m going through I need to get through with my day. Rubbing my eyes I went to my washroom to take a shower and get ready for a long day at school.
. . .
I arrived at the school early enough to have a few minutes to speak with my friends. Today was Thursday, only one more day of school before the weekend; thank god. “Hey Bec” I looked up from my phone to see Elena looking at me. “Hey” I said and walked towards her. She looked at me questioningly and said “What’s wrong?” I looked up at her then looked back down at my phone. Waiting a second I looked back up at her and said “If I’m going to tell you, I’m going to wait for Lux and Jules. I don’t want to have to repeat this.” A single tear ran down my face and I quickly wiped it away. Elena gave me a hug and nodded. A while later we spotted Lux and Jules. We waved them over to a bench and I started to explain what had happened with my mom. They all nodded understanding and comforted me. When I finished talking Lux was the first one to speak. “You need to get your mind of things for just a moment to remember what it was like before all this pain. I love your mom but I also love you. So I want you to be happy as well.” I nodded slowly. “Lux has a point. After we let you live a little we can all go visit your mom together.” Elena responded. Jules sat there staring at me with sorrow. “Jules?” I asked him. He looked at me for a moment but then said “I am so sorry for what is happening to you. When my mom passed away I broke on the inside. We weren’t warned about her sickness so when it happened it was too quick. I’m not saying it is good for you but you should spend as much time with your mom as possible Bec. It took me a year to accept that she is gone. Even so, it still hurts for her to be gone.” I didn’t know if that was supposed to make me feel better or worse. I just blinked at his words. When I thought about what he said, I realized he had a point. I can’t get past that she is sick. I need to take advantage of all the time I have with her now before she is gone... forever. Another tear slid down my face. I cursed at myself for being so emotional in public but I couldn’t help it. “Even so Bec, you should still let yourself have a little time for yourself once and while. I agree with Lux and Elena. We should all go have a little fun.” I gave a small smile and nodded. When I looked at Jules, I observed his features. He had brown eyes, slightly long wavy hair that he spiked up. The slight curls in his hair enhanced his look and made him considered as sexy. He was a bit over six feet and had a muscular build. I know that lots of girls who were completely in love with him, but I knew that he didn’t have any interest in any of them. He was a football player and lots of the cheerleaders and other girls were head over heels for him. Though you’d think he’s dating one of the cheerleaders because he’s a jock, he isn’t. He is plainly just friends with them. Jules isn’t a stupid jock, he has a brain; quite an intelligent brain actually. He has a 90% grade average and with all the sports that he plays, it’s really phenomenal. He’s smart, kind, thoughtful and attractive. I mean, he is my best friend and I wouldn’t ruin our friendship to date him but he is kind on the eyes. I took out some make up from my bag and fixed my foundation and applied another coat of mascara on. I don’t wear a lot of makeup but I wear the basics. Like foundation, mascara, lip gloss and on some occasions, eyeliner and eye shadow. When I put away my makeup I heard someone call my name. Jules had been standing up to go up to his other friends but turned towards the voice. The voice seemed familiar but the others looked confused. I turned to look for who was calling my name and I spotted Silas. “Silas?” I said in shock. He walked closer and smiled. “Who is that? I mean wow.” I heard Elena whisper to me. I laughed a little and stood to walk closer to him. Jules walked back to my little group. I noticed a few eyes on Silas as he walked closer. I wouldn’t blame those people for looking. He stood out from the crowd. I saw a few girls staring at him. “You go to this school?” I asked him. Before he replied to my question, he surprised me by giving me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. I stood there stunned but he nodded and said “Since today. My first day at this school, aren’t you going to introduce me to your friends?” I laughed a little when he said that and motioned to the people behind him who were still staring. “It looks like there are a bunch of people who want be your friend.” He took a quick look behind him and said “Them? I’m used to being started at.” He said with a wink. I gave him a light punch and I was about to ask him why he is going to my school now when I heard a girl yell “Silas!” He seemed a bit surprised by the call. He raised a brow at me and turned around. I walked beside him and noticed a blond girl who had her hair in a high pony tail carrying several books. Her smile was so big I thought her face was going to break. Great I thought. He has a girlfriend. The girl seemed familiar and as she ran up to Silas’s side I realized it was Saundra Nikolas. I didn’t know her very well accept for the fact that she was a photography geek. She was gorgeous; she had curly blond hair, emerald green eyes and a pointed nose. She gave Silas a one armed hug because her other arm was holding her books. Why doesn’t she just put her books in her bag? Whatever. Silas grinned as they hugged and winked at me and I smiled. “Saundra I’d like you to meet Becca. Becca Thomas meet Saundra Nickolas.” Saundra smiled at me. “I know you! Weren’t you on the cheerleading team but quit because you were better than the captain or something?” She said in one breath. “Um yeah…” Silas laughed. “Seems like you have a fan Bec.” I loved the way he said my nickname. His low, laid back voice glided over the words like a melody. “Silas, do you still want me to show you around the school?” Saundra asked. He nodded and said “Yeah just give me a second.” She nodded enthusiastically and walked away. “Are you guys dating?” I asked carefully. He laughed I felt a rush of relief run through my body. “Nope, I have a different person in mind.” He winked. He could either be suggesting that the person he had in mind was me, or he was just being cute and winked but actually had no interest in me. I didn’t want to think about it because I would hate for Silas to be around another girl. Even though he was still a new person in my life, I did not want him to have a girlfriend other than me. I sound obsessive but it’s true. Not knowing what to say, I laughed a little then said “I’ll see you later Silas.” He nodded and walked away. I stared after him and smiled as I walked back to Lux, Elena and Jules. Lux and Elena were gushing about how amazingly good looking Silas was. I agreed with everything they said. Silas was a huge positive distraction in my life, and that is one of the biggest things I need right now. With my mother’s cancer, the only thing I need is something positive in my life; I was hoping I’d find the positivity in Silas. After several minutes of talking about Silas, Jules spoke up out of the blue. “He’s cool and all but Bec, I think you should be careful around him.” I heard Lux mumble something like “Damn he’s jealous.” But before he could say any more, the bell rang.
