I realized that chapter 1 was too long for most people's liking so I changed quite a bit and split it in two, enjoy. Though, I am still making several tweaks to this story, and I'd love to hear some feedback. I've learned quite a lot about writing these months so if you do read back to this story, you should be expecting lots and lots of editing changes. I hope you like them. Thank you all, please vote and share! xxx Mona
Writing notes at the end of the day is a pain in the ass. Looking over at the window, I watched the trees swaying in the wind. Nearby a large oak tree, there was a tall gloomy figure. I couldn't see their face; it was protected by the shade of their hood. Only the sharp silhouette outline of their body was visible. No other detail was present. When I blinked, the person had disappeared. A minor headache found its way into my head and I shut my eyes for a moment longer. When I opened my eyes again, I looked away from the window and ignored the thought of the shadowy figure. As I was writing down math notes, I felt my phone vibrate against my leg. I checked to see if my teacher was watching and slid my phone from my pocket and behind the shadow of my desk. Lux, Elena and Jules's contacts popped onto the screen of my phone. Lux started the convo with; -Can you guys come for a coffee after school? I replied -I'll be there. Elena wrote -Only if Becca drives :P I am NOT walking. I laughed and typed -haha fine.-I'm in! Elena is in she quickly typed back. Lux replied -Jules hbu? After a few seconds Jules replied -Alright, see you ladies after class.-Until then. I wrote and tucked my phone away. "Becca, can you solve this problem?" I heard my teacher ask. I looked up a bit thrown off by her question but then registered what she said. I heard a few snickers from some people but they didn't faze me. Math was my best subject, we had started a new lesson but I've already learned it before. I walked up to the board to solve the equation. "If the slope of the line is represented by the equation 2x-y=4 then the y-intercept is -4 and the slope is -1." I announced. The entire class went silent and I went back to my seat in triumph. The rest of the period went by quickly and the final bell rang. I packed up my things, noted down my homework and started to walk out the door when my teacher stopped me and said "Becca, because you are my best student I didn't rat you out for texting. Next time you're on your phone in class I am taking it away. Understood?" I gave my best smile and replied "Thank you and it won't happen again." I slung my bag over my shoulder and headed towards my locker. -I'll meet you guys at my car. I wrote onto the group chat. They all texted back saying okay. We were in 11th grade but Jules and I were the only ones who had cars; but his car was in the shop for repairs. I walked out of the school doors and walked to the parking lot. My car came into view and I found Jules leaning against the side door, chatting with a girl from the cheerleading team. They both saw me walking closer and the girl gave Jules a flirtatious wink and I, a cold glare. The girl left and Jules turned to me with a smile. "Is she your summer fling?" I asked teasingly. He laughed. "I have my eyes on a different girl." His voice trailed off. When I looked back at him, his dark blue eyes were on me. I quickly turned away and got into the car. He ran his hand through his dirty blond hair and opened the door to the seat next to mine. Moments after, Lux and Elena came running into view. "Let's go!" Lux squealed. "Somebody's excited." I laughed. "Shut up Becca." She replied grinning. I put my car into drive and the engine roared to life.
. . .
"Sorry these seats are taken." I said to a stranger. "My friends are just ordering." The man mumbled an apology and walked away. My eyes followed him until he left through the door. The moment he did, a sudden dizziness enveloped me. When it passed, I refocused my eyes back to the door. I cocked my head slightly to the side. What had I been looking at? Then I remembered the hooded stranger; but I didn't really remember him at all. The only thing that reassured me that he wasn't a figment of my imagination was his eyes. I barely noticed them when I had spoken to him but now I could remember them clearly. They were such a dark shade of brown that could've passed as black in a dimmer lighting. The memory of his eyes was fading and the more I thought of it. The memory of his presence sent a certain kind of unease through me and I quickly let it subside. Elena walked up to me and asked "Who were you talking to?" I looked at her confused. "The guy that walked in here a second ago..." I said trailing off. Elena stared silently but then said, "Becca, sweetheart, nobody has came in here after us." "Of course somebody came in here. Did you not see the guy with the grey sweater?" I countered. " I guess I didn't see him. It's not like you're seeing ghosts." She said laughing and went back in line to get the drinks. I heard the door chime, I turned to see who it was, half hoping that is was the black eyed stranger, and the other half hoping it was just a random customer. Turned out it was just a tourist asking for directions. When I turned around again, I came face to face with two jet black eyes. I let out high pitched scream and everyone turned towards me in shock. I blinked and the eyes were gone. Jules, Lux and Elena came rushing towards me. "What happened?" They all said together. I considered telling them the truth but then thought otherwise. "There was a wasp in here and it almost landed on me." I lied. Everyone sighed in annoyed relief, then went back to their own conversations. Lux, Elena and Jules looked relieved but not fully convinced by my lie. Either way, they let it go. They sat down beside me and handed me my drink. We sat there chatting about everything for almost an hour. "I need to get going; I have a chemistry test tomorrow." "WHAT? I thought that was on Monday!" Jules was in my chemistry class and obviously had no clue about the test. I laughed and said, "Do you really think they'd give us five days to study?" "But he told us about it yesterday!" "Well, catch up." I responded jokingly. "In that case I've got to go too. Becca, can you drop me off?" "Sure." I shrugged. We said good-bye to Lux and Elena and headed towards my car. Minutes later, I pulled up onto his driveway. "Thanks for the drive, I owe you." I shook my head and said "Nah, its cool." He waved his good-bye and opened the door to his house. I adjusted my car mirror and pulled up my hair into a pony tail. My hair was pin needle straight and the colour of a hazelnut. It had been summer for not too long and it was already feeling extremely hot and humid. I sat in the car letting the days events run through my head. I'd gotten a 98% on my history test and won my race for our track and field practice competition. Thinking about today made me think about our discussion in the morning. Most of the people who had died or disappeared were girls. It was terrifying to think about what the girls must've gone through during their deaths. Wanting to shake off the dark thoughts, I took in a deep breath and started to back of Jules's driveway. Looking in the rear-view mirror, I backed out onto the road when I felt a bump under my car. I abruptly pressed the breaks and jumped out of the car; afraid to find out what I hit. Hoping that it was just a stone I walked over to my left tire. I stopped dead in my tracks. A scream almost escaped my lips but I quickly placed my hand over my mouth to muffle any sound I was about to make. A battered up hand lay lying still under the tire, but there was no sign of blood anywhere. I leaned closer to the tire to get a better look at the hand before I decided what do to next.
