I just embarrassed myself in front of Silas. I thought. Why the hell would I ask Silas about being at the coffee shop the other day? Even if he wasn’t there, why would any of that be important? I am a complete idiot around him. I never get nervous when cute guy talks to me. Maybe because he isn’t just a normal guy, he is so... perfect. I checked my phone for the time and rushed to my next class.
. . .
The rest of the school day past quickly and when the last bell rang, I packed all my things and went to the football field. Jules’s party was starting around 8-9pm so I had enough time to watch the football practice, eat dinner, do my homework and make it to Jules’s party. When I thought about going home, I suddenly felt like I was betraying my mom if I decided to go to the party and not stay with her. Knowing that she’d tell me to go have fun, I couldn’t handle my mother not being around me. After a moment of thinking of whether I should or shouldn’t go to the party, I decided to give my mom a call. I still had time before the football team would come onto the field so I dialed my home phone number. After two rings, my mother picked up the phone. “Hey mom” Even though I couldn’t see her, I knew that she was smiling on the other line. She was the type of person to smile at the smallest things in life and try to enjoy all that she had. A person like that should have the best of luck with their life and not be gone from the earth so early... As I thought about my mother’s cancer, I had to stifle the tears that were threatening to fall. I knew that my mom would want me to stay strong, if not for myself, it was the least I could do for her. I was already talking as if she were gone. Feeling ashamed of my way of thinking, I felt as if I was drowning in my own thoughts. “Hi sweetie” She said calmly. She acted as if everything was fine and I was glad she was dealing with her sickness better than I was. “I love you mom.” She gave a small laugh and joked “Woah sweetie I’m not gone yet.” I forced a laugh but it came out like a croak. Cursing at myself when a tear drop fell from my eye, I quickly wiped it away and I heard my mother say “I love you too.” Struggling to smile, I told her that Jules was hosting a party and I asked if I could go. Like I had guessed she said “Of course you can go. I may be sick but you’ve still got a long life ahead of you and you deserve to have fun.” “Thanks mom. I really feel as if I should stay home and spend more time with you...” My throat felt tight. It was the feeling you go when you are trying to hold back tears, and that was exactly doing that; holding back tears. “No you need to let your self have fun. It’s the weekend tomorrow but don’t be home too late okay?” I started to nod but then remembered that she couldn’t see me so I replied with “Okay, oh and mom?” “Yeah?” “I’m going to stay and watch the football practice; do you need me to run any errands?” Like the great mom she is, she didn’t ask why I was staying to watch. She only said “Could you go to the grocery store to buy some cream for coffee? We’re running out.” “Sure, I’ll make sure I get the good kind.” “Okay well have fun sweetie, I’ll see you soon.” Feeling slightly better after speaking to her I said “See you, love you.” Without another word, we both hung up. Noting on my phone that I needed to buy some coffee cream, I wiped off the tear stains from my face and looked out to the football field. The football players started to walk out onto the field. My eyes scanned the group of people, looking for Silas. Jules was among the players and waved to me when he saw me. I waved back, but mid-wave I saw Silas. He was wearing one of our old football gear. He looked like he fit in with the football players perfectly, besides the fact that he was wearing a different jersey. He saw me and waved, I waved back. I sat near the front of the stadium chairs so he ran up to me and said “Wish me luck!” I smiled and said “Good luck!” “Ah, never mind I don’t need it.” He winked at me. His gaze went warm waves of heat through my body and I loved it. Before he walked back to the huddled football players he said “If I make the team, you have to join the cheerleading again.” I laughed at his words. He ran back to the group of football players and I saw Jules eyeing him suspiciously. He had a serious expression on his face and he just stared at Silas as if he was a killer. Silas noticed him staring and just gave him a charming smile. Jules looked away but had a scowl on his face. I watched Silas in amusement as he looked at all the football players and faked a gag at each of them. I could tell he was not enjoying their company. I laughed.
