"Jules is... he’s dead.” I cried onto Silas’s blood stained shoulder. “They killed him!” Rage burned in my soul, fire rippled through me. The damn vampires killed my best friend. Even the nicest people have their limits, and the vampires sure as hell crossed the line. “I’m sorry Becca. I don’t know how you feel, but I’ll be here for you.” Silas’s words passed through me like a breeze. I could barely hear him over the pounding in my ears but he continued to speak. “Jules was a great guy. He loved you, cared for you. I may not have really liked him but he treated you well and he saved my life.” Silas said in a hushed, sincere tone. At that moment, my boiling anger suddenly turned back to tears. There was no way Jules was dead. He couldn’t be. I took another look at his body. A large pool of blood was surrounding his body and was etching closer and closer to where Silas and I stood. Then, I saw his hand twitch. “Jules!” I ran back to his body and crouched at his head, where there was the least of blood. Silas was right behind me. “Becca, he’s gone.” I refused to believe Silas. “No, I saw his arm, it moved.” I told Silas, my words fumbling over each other. I still clung onto the hope of Jules’s survival. “Becca, I know you don’t want accept it, but he’s gone.” I shook Jules’s body. He didn’t move. “No, no, no!” I yelled. Tears poured from my eyes. “Jules, please wake up.” I whispered. Flies were starting to fly towards his open flesh. I shooed the flies away and jumped to my feet. “He’s gone isn’t he?” I asked Silas. Silas gave me a saddened, curt nod. My face showed no emotion. I felt like I was living a nightmare. I felt as if I would wake up at any moment to see Jules alive and well. I knew it wouldn’t happen. I would have to deal with the fact that Jules was dead; but how? He had always been like a brother to me. He’s somebody I’ve known for years but it turned out that he was the Seeing One and now, he’s dead. “I hate those vampires!” I screamed and kicked at the grass and mud on the ground. I wanted to blame Faded Shadows for his death but I knew that I couldn’t do that. Jules’s death was out of their control. Crying harder, I thought back to the last words Jules had said to me. “He’ll take care of you Bec, I know it.” He had kissed me on the forehead and ran into the battle. Minutes after his first phone call, Jules had called again and told me where he was going. I had demanded for him to take me with him; and he did. When Silas had been fighting off one of the vampires, another had been gaining momentum and was about to run a sword through his back. Jules had run up to the vampire and jammed a wooden stake into the heart of the vampire and saved Silas’s life; but he wasn’t able to save his own. Before the vampire was impaled, he managed to cut open a large, painful gash on Jules’s stomach. His entire torso was covered in blood in only a few seconds. The grass around him had been stained and wet from his blood. I had witnessed the death of my best friend. I’d ran over to his increasingly bloody body. The moment I kneeled beside him, a woman had yelled “We surrender!”
