Silas carried his body to his car and placed him in the back seat, on top of a long towel. “I should call his parents.” I told Silas and he agreed. I pulled out my phone from my pocket and held it with trembling hands. Dialing his home phone number, after a few rings, his mother picked up the phone. “Hello?” “Hi Mrs. Capri, it’s Becca.” I still felt the tears swelling in my eyes. “Oh hello Becca, how are you?” The tears came back and a whimper escaped my lips. “Sweetie what’s wrong?” I knew that I couldn’t exactly tell her the truth but I told her most of it. “It’s Jules, he’s gone.” There was silence on the other side of the line and I could only hear the echoes of my sobs. “Becca if this is a joke, it’s not funny.” was all she said. I wasn’t surprised that she didn’t believe me. I wished it was some sick joke, but it was reality and in reality, Jules was dead. Between breaths, I said “He was in the wrong part of town. Somebody must’ve took him by surprise because there was only one wound.” I paused and took in a large breath. “There is a long gash across his stomach.” I was the type of person who rarely played jokes on people so this time, she believed me. I could hear his mother crying but she managed to ask “How did you find him?” I took in a deep breath and responded with “I got a call from somebody and they told me that they saw his body and his phone. I was on the list of most recent calls so they dialed my number and told me what happened. My boyfriend and I drove to where he was and…” I couldn’t say anymore. Not only did I hate lying to Jules’s mother about his death but his death in general made me choke on my words. “Bring him to me, please.” His mother said quietly. Her words were soft but filled with agony. “I’m on my way.” We were already close to his house so we were there in a few minutes. My eyes were red and swollen by the time we got there. Silas got out of the car and went to his trunk to grab a clean shirt. I noticed that his shirt was all bloody and his jacket had several cuts that left his own wounds open to infections. He slid off his jacket and took off his shirt. Even at times like this, I couldn’t help but admire his well built body. Light stubble was forming on his jaw line and his chin brushed the top of his shirt when he slid it off. He grabbed a plastic water bottle and poured a portion of the water onto his torso and face. He pulled out a white towel from his truck and wiped himself off. I felt as if he had everything in his trunk. He slid on a different V-cut T-shirt but instead of black, it was a dark blue colour. His pants still had a couple of blood stains on them, but it wasn’t noticeable if you didn’t know what you were looking for. Even after this disastrous day, it looked as if his hair was barely fussed with. It was styled into a quiff and still looked as good as it did any other long day. Running a hand through his hair, he went to the back seat and lifted Jules up. I shifted my eyes away from Silas’s distracting features; I followed him to the front door. I rang the door bell and his father answered the door. “Please, lay him on the couch.” I could see that his eyes were almost as swollen as mine. Silas gently rested his body onto their couch. “Dad who’s that?” A young female voice called form up the stairs. Jules had a younger sister named Evelyn and she was only eleven years old. “Just some friends” Jules’s father yelled to Evelyn. I guessed that they hadn’t told her yet. His father thanked us for bringing Jules to us and told us that we should leave. Silas walked up to the couch and said “Thank you, rest in peace Jules.” Then he lightly patted Jules on the chest. Tears were falling from my eyes again. I walked over to his body and kissed his cold forehead. “I hope you live a well deserved, afterlife full of riches and peace. I’ll be sure to have a drink in your honour tomorrow. Thank you, for everything.” I told him quietly. I walked back to Silas and he wrapped his arm around my shoulder. He placed a kiss on my forehead and I turned my face back to Jules. “Good-bye Jules. You were; are a great friend and you will forever be remembered.” With one last glance at his body, Silas and I left his house.
