Darren knocks the front door of Samantha's apartment. He kicks the dust around on the ground as he waits for Samantha to open the door. After a minute, there was no answer. "Samantha" Darren calls out as he knocks on the door.
Darren waits a bit before he looks down the hallway seeing no one in sight before he raises his leg then kicks down the door. He slowly crept into the apartment, Darren pulls out his pistol from his jacket's pocket and raises it into the air as he goes against the wall and looks over the corner to see Samantha's legs in view. Darren raises his eyebrows before placing his pistol back into his pocket as he walks toward Samantha's bedroom. "Samantha?" Darren says as he enters her bedroom to see blood stained around her body. "Holy fuck... Samantha!" Darren yells as he gets on his knees and pulls up the corpse onto his lap. He lightly taps her left cheek without looking for any other wounds. Her soulless eyes watch him as he then looks up to see the bullet wound in her forehead with blood on the sides. His eyes immediately tear up as a baby that seems to be nearby cries.
Darren looks down at Samantha then closes her eyes shut with his fingers before placing her down on the ground before walking out of the bedroom following the baby cries. He turns the corner to a nearby bedroom. He spots a crib and began to slowly walk toward it then looks over the crib to see a newborn baby perfectly safe in a blue blanket. Darren sighs in relief with a smile as he reaches over the crib to pick up the baby from the crib. His eyes stare into the infant that continues to cry from the lack of attention from its now-deceased mother. "I am here, little one." Darren whispers as he rocks the child before walking out of the bedroom and into Samantha's bedroom. He places the baby onto her bed just so he can look for documentation for the baby to figure out his age and name.
Darren opens a nearby drawer to look inside. He turns around as he hears footsteps coming toward the bedroom. "Who's there?" Darren calls out as he sees a man standing underneath the doorway. The man looks down with his eyes widened at the dead body on the ground then back up to Darren. Darren immediately shakes his head as he raises his hands up slowly into the air. "I swear that I didn't kill her. I was worried about her. I came by to see her since I haven't heard from her for a few days. She's a close friend of mine."
"Oh... I'm sorry. I am the landlord of this building and I have a few officers that are here with me since we had a few neighbors that complained about this apartment." The landlord said as he looks down at Samantha's dead body. "She was such a sweet woman... along with her husband. Is that her child? I knew that she was pregnant but I wasn't aware that she had given birth already? What are you looking for? Maybe, I could help you after I escort the police up here to investigate the crime scene."
"I'm looking for the child's documents. I'm not sure of the baby's name." Darren replies as the man nods his head with a smile.
"Oh... they might've placed it in their family safe. They had a construction project last summer to insert a safe inside of the wall. Here, let me show you." The man responds as he walks over to a painting on the wall. He picks up from the hook that it was sitting on top off and then places it on the ground. He opens the latch of a door and revealed the safe. "Just as I remembered it. I'm not sure of the combination but it might be hidden in a safe spot. You'll have to look for that on your own while I bring up the police." The man adds as Darren walks toward the safe. Darren nods his head as the man walks past, excusing himself as he went back downstairs to where the police were waiting. Darren places his hand on the safe and rubs off the dust from the outer layer. He looks over at Samantha's body.
"Nice work, Sam." He says before a sparkling object interrupts his stare. Darren raises an eyebrow as he walks toward her body to pick up her heart-shaped necklace. He turns his head around to see if the landlord and the police would show up. Once the close was clear and turns his face back down at the necklace as he was still holding onto it. "Sorry, Sam.." Darren mumbles as he pulls off the necklace from her neck. He held on to the necklace and studies it before noticing a latch on the side of it. He glances back down at Samantha's face before he opens up the latch to see a small paper rolled up inside, Darren immediately unrolls it to see the numbers: fourteen- nineteen- fifty-six on the paper and quickly walks over to the safe throwing the necklace back down beside her to open up the safe. "Fourteen... nineteen... fifty...six" Darren mumbles to himself as he rolls the knob of the lock as he looks down at the paper while placing in the numbers. It immediately unlocks and swung open. Darren reaches into the safe to find a few documents inside along with Danny's death certificate and birth certificate along with Samantha's own documents. "It isn't in here... what the fuck.." Darren grumbles as he steps back and reaches up to his hair and sat down on the bed. "Fuck.." Darren adds as the police chief and the landlord came into the room. The other remaining officers began their investigation and two paramedics place a black blanket on top of Samantha's body.
"Did you find what you were looking for?" The landlord asks as he walks over to Darren.
"I'm afraid not. I couldn't find the birth certificate." Darren answers as the police chief came by.
"She might have not named the child just yet. Some parents can wait for forty- two days before an arrest is made. By chance, do you know how many days old the infant is?" The officer asks as Darren looks down.
"I'm afraid that I don't know." He responds.
"How about the child's father?"
"Dead... he died recently." Darren answers immediately as he looks up.
"So, the child is now an orphaned. Do you know if the child might have any family members nearby."
"Yeah... I know them." Darren says as he walks over to the baby. He places his finger against the palm of the baby's hand as the baby closes his hand and held onto Darren's finger.
"That child will rely on whoever takes the child in when it's growing up." The officer says as he stands beside Darren. Darren looks over at his side then back at the child.
"He'll be in great hands.." Darren answers as he stares directly at the child with a smile.
