WARNINGS: light mentions of homophobia

The dark, clouded sky showcased not a single star, the sea of city lights drowning them out. The football field was lit up with bright, white lights that helped guide the players, coaches, and guests. The stands along the sidelines erupted with applause and shouts from the audience. Cheerleaders before the audience kept the energy alive along with the assistant of the school band.

It was a Friday night. Only being October, the weather was just cool enough. There was a slight breeze, keeping the usual unbearable Arizona heat away. Arguably, the perfect night for a high school football game.

"I actually hate you for bringing me here," Keith bitterly spoke, bored eyes following the players running across the field. Crowds of obnoxious people, sports, and forced interaction with his peers was a personal hell for Keith. He often preferred his room, where there were less people, sounds and anxiety.

Pidge sighed as she held up her camera, snapping a few pictures of the players on the field. "Listen, Debby Downer, I need to do this for yearbook. I don't want to be here either but I am," she responded, trying to focus back on her camera work.

"You couldn't have brought..." Keith trailed off into thought. Did they have any other friends?

Pidge looked up at Keith. She adjusted her glasses and snickered. "Exactly, we don't have friends, so you're kind of stuck with me."

Keith sighed and titled his head back. They were sitting in the front row of the bleachers. You know, where the loud parents sat. "Kill me now," Keith whined. There wasn't a thing on earth he hated more than school events.

"You have five more minutes of the game, just shut up," Pidge silenced the Raven-haired boy. "Look at the football players and be quiet."

She kept her gaze through her camera lens, praying on the moment to get a good shot. Pidge watched closely as the players ran back and forth through her view, adjusting the lens as they got closer. Through her focus, her gaze fell on a specific player, the player that caught the eye of many. "Lance McClain, number 28."

"You mean the dumbass in our fourth hour?" Keith asked. His eyes scanned the field in search of the player. "He's got such a pretty face, but he's so... stupid."

Pidge snorted. "So you think he's cute?"

"You'd be crazy to not find Lance attractive," Keith mumbled softly. He felt a little embarrassed admitting that, but Lance just had a charm to him. Even if he was another cocky rich boy, he was awfully cute.

"That's a stretch. He's alright," Pidge said with a shrug. "Don't go around boosting his ego though."

"Pfft, as if that's even possible. He's so full of himself I don't think his ego can get any bigger."

Keith had known Lance since freshman year. Fortunately for Keith, they were never friends. Simply just acquaintances. Keith was the gay outcast that no one paid attention to, and Lance was the rich, pretty boy that everyone loved. They lived in two very separate worlds. That's why the two never really spoke. Often times, Keith felt as if him and Lance were even in different universes, a line defined by class and popularity keeping them apart.

Pidge on the other hand had known Lance since kindergarten. They used to be really close friends until Lance started associating with the popular crowd. "You'd be surprised," Pidge said softly, desperately trying to focus on getting pictures.

Only a few more minutes went by before the game ended. Another win for Altea High that Keith would have to hear about on the morning announcement come Monday. Keith watched as number 28, Lance, took off his helmet in excitement. The team gathered in the middle of the field the celebrate their victory. Keith could only scoff, fighting the urge to cringe. They won every game, you'd think the excitement would die out eventually. Keith never really understood the point of sports. All the players did was get hurt to entertain others. Not to mention, it was extremely boring.
